Re: Michelin power 2ct or power race med comp.

the regular pilot powers are plenty good for times down into the sub 1:25's easy. Same goes for the 2CT's

Warmers aren't necessary for any tire for track day use, regardless of compound. The first few laps of every session should be used as a sighting lap & to warm up the mind & body. The tires will be warm by the time you work your way up to speed.

I'd like to use tire warmers for piece of mind. I don't want to use Pilot Powers. I'm looking to use a DOT race tire and the 2 I asked about above I'm going to try out this season. What I don't want is a tire that is worse than say a Pilot Power on the street because it isn't being warmed up enough.

well then you're in luck, cuz the 2ct isn't technically a DOT race tire, so that narrows down your choices.

Like I said, tire Warmers are 100% unnecessary at a track day. Their soul purpose is to give you HOT tires going into turn 1. At a track day you don't need that. The first lap of each session should be a sighting lap & a body/mind warm-up as well as a tire warm-up. If you can't warm a tire up in 2 laps or less then you're never gonna get it up to operating temp.

Now you're welcome to get some DOT Race rubber, I'm not telling you that you can't, but you don't need it. A tire like the Pilot Powers is good for lap times well below 1:25's.
If you don't believe me, take it from a guy that lives & breaths Michelin.... 1:17's!!!!
(he used to eat em, too but he stopped doin that years ago when he found out they have trans-fats)

Now I wouldn't give you this advice if I didn't practice it as well. I run DOT race rubber (Dragon Supercorsas) which takes longer to warm up than a street/track tire like the Pilot Powers or 2CT (very quick warm-up time) and I don't use warmers at track days. In my opinion it's one more thing to worry about in an already busy & hectic day.

I had the Power race Med compound on my streetbike. They are kinda slow to warm up and seemed to wear quickly. Honestly I won't ride a DOT race tire on the street again.

    Go with the 2CT's

I can't seem to figure out how to quote everyone in one window here so...

Denno - Its a direct question to keep the subject one one spot. Articulate?

OreoGitorio - I guess you answered my question right there with the 2ct's. I hear ya on the tire warmers now. I guess its not worth the expense and hassle at a trackday. On those cool spring and fall days will just have to do 1 more lap.

Any wow, 17's on a street tire! I guess all my doubts in street rubber has been lifted.

I have to admit to being curious about this too, as neither WPS nor PU can give me any solid info about their availability...

Stick with 2CT's for track days - they're good for sub 25's as posted above, and warm up very quickly. And you'll be able to keep tire costs down because you can use them on the street as well.

The standard Powers are good as well but will slide around in the corners below '21's IME as per the picture attached.

WPS and PU by contract are not allowed to carry race tires since they cannot technically support the product.

The Power Race series is a track day tire by design.

We should know by the end of the month. Michelin has new DOT's and slicks coming. The question is how fast can France make them for worldwide supply. They have been tested in the US last summer/fall and did very well.

If they cannot make them fast enough, we will see the 2007 designs for at least part of the season - the standard Power Race and the Race only PR series.

Some of the new slicks were released late summer and they were 2CT. But only a handful.

A standard Pilot Power will do 27's all day long. Cheaper than race tires, too. Plus - they are an excellent wet weather tire for DOT racing.

Jay, I'm a lurker here, but I live in Medford... you should come grab a beer sometime!!!

I also wanted to semi-disagree on the 100% uneccessary for trackdays theory.... I agree that there's not much point in warming up your tires for your session as you should ease into it, however if you wrap the tires *immediately* upon coming into the pits they will maintain their heat cycle and release fewer compounds, prolonging the life of your tire.

Or if you're out more frequently, or it's a very hot day then don't bother.

I have become a firm believer in wrapping tires up immediately after coming off track, even if the warmers aren't plugged in it will let them slow down slowly... but for trackdays I leave them plugged in and wrapped between every session to prolong the heat cycle as much as possible.

I keep my tires in the freezer to ensure freshness. However, it also directly affects the number of frozen burritos that you can keep in stock at a given time. Therefore, I recommend a dedicated race freezer. This allows you to keep your rubber properly chilled while maintaining a steady supply of frozen burritoey goodness.

Heat cycles are never a concern with street tires. And why with race tires?
