Midwesterner going to cape cod next summer, worth taking the bike?

Hi all, My name is Aaron, and i have a question

My folks are renting a house for a few weeks on cape cod for their 35th anniversary (they honey-mooned there), and my wife and I are invited to come out for a week, they will even pay the airfare. but, i have been thinking about riding out from milwaukee (1100+ miles in two days) to have the bike for the week. the ride there and back would be mostly slab just to save time, but once i am there it looks like there would be great riding on and around cape cod.

am i right? or will it just be crowded tourist hell?? this trip will be in the beginning of july.

The riding is scenic, historic and touristy.

EDIT: To expand on that, it's a crapshoot on how bad the crowds are.

    Welcome to the forum, BTW.

Plenty of very nice riding on the cape and if you're prepared to ride about 2 hours off cape you will find some really awesome riding in western massachusetts or new hampshire.

A week or so before you head out here, check this board and look for rides and events. there will be plenty of group rides to go on if you feel like having company of locals. Some of us are even nice people!

Hmmmm,, Wisconsin. Do you know any of the following?

    1. Peter Egan
    2. Red from "That 70's Show"

Two of my heroes. I try to base my attitude on red as much as possible. Unfortunately, my hair is following suit.

i actually did meet peter egan 7-8 years ago while he was signing books at the duc dealer, of course i was not into bikes at that time. but, i knew of egan through his writing in car magazines. i was actually working for Red Bull at the time and had to go to the event to hand out that shit. lol

I lived in Dubuque Iowa for a couple years... Riding in New England is WAY different than the mid west.
I drove from here to there several times (1100 miles). I think my best time was 18.5 hours.

If you'll have the time when your here, Deffinately have fun and take advantage of it!!!!!

But watch out for the scenery in Provice Town

Welcome!!! Lots to see in New England anytime. Get a cheap surfcasting rod and some seaworms. No license needed. Find a jetty. Maybe you can catch a 60 pound stripper or a blue fish. Yummy stuff.

Re: Midwesterner going to cape cod next summer, worth taking the bike?

    welcome,

I was born and raised on the cape and i ride there often. There are tons of good roads if you are willing to look for them. That being said there are some concerns

    1. Traffic- if you are going in the beginning of july then be well prepared for traffic. one thing that people do not realize about cape cod is that it is technically an island. there is a canal that cuts it off from the mainland and there are only 2 roads in and out. as a consequence of this in the summer (Friday and Saturday specifically) there are huge backups on the bridges that go over. either arrive on another day or shoot to cross the bridge before 8am or after 9pm (or try to lane split but watch out for the state police station right over the Bourne bridge). furthermore once you get over the bridge there are 2 roads that are the central arteries of the cape, rt6 which is a two lane highway and rt28 which is a 50mph one lane rd. both can be a nightmare till you get through the middle of the cape. Also if you are not familiar with rotaries look them up!

    2. Sand- be vigilant! there is a fair bit of the stuff on some roads. down by the beaches this is unavoidable. this is more of a problem on the upper cape towards province town where sand can actually blow over the road.

    3. Scenery- eyes on the prize buddy! it is really easy to get caught up with the eye candy and loose your focus. saw a guy dump a harley last summer in front of a blond in a bikini.

    4. police- cape cod hires extra in the summer to handle the crowds. therefore there is an increased presence on the roads. 10mph over is not a problem but anything else, with an out of state plate, you are looking at a ticket.

other than that there are some of the best roads in all of the north east for motorcycles. keep your head about you and you will have a great time.

What they said -- take it slow and scenic -- maybe EARLY mornings, like dawn -- 6A is nice -- shore roads along Buzzards Bay through Monument Beach to Falmouth -- National Seashore roads around Wellfleet -- avoid Rte 28 unless you are going to the mall --

    Here's a destination: http://www.thebeachcomber.com/
