Don't buy the MC specific stuff. It's a couple bucks a qt more and it's the very same oil that's in the red top 15w50 Mobil 1 auto oil containers found just about everywhere. The Mobil rep for southern NH told me this. I've been using it for two years now and I have had nothing but success.

The 'old' red cap Mobil 1 15w50 used to not contain additives found in automotive engine oil formulas, but that is no longer the case. In either case, I have found the bike-specific formula to be good stuff, and seems to hold up to 3000 miles on average before breaking down -- judging by engine & transmission smoothness, compared to other oils that hold up for about 2000. Oil is a lot like beer, when it comes time to buy.

    From the Mobil site:

Q: I’ve used automotive engine oils, such as Mobil 1
15W-50, in my motorcycle transmission and
engine. Why should I switch to Mobil 1 with
    SuperSyn V-Twin 20W-50?
A: Although both formulations are based on the
    same race-proven technology, compared to
Mobil 1 for automobiles, Mobil 1 with SuperSyn
    V-Twin 20W-50:
Is specifically designed for air-cooled engines
and their primaries and transmissions, while
    Mobil 1 15W-50 is formulated for water-cooled
    passenger vehicles.
Contains 25 percent more anti-wear and antioxidant
additives to meet the greater demands of
air-cooled engines and their higher operating
    temperatures.
Is completely shear stable – it will remain a high
50-weight oil in service without viscosity loss.
Mobil 1 15W-50, on the other hand, will exhibit
some shear loss in motorcycle applications.

No offense Chris but you're gonna take Mobil corps word for it? Of course they want you to buy the MC specific stuff, they make more money on it. The Mobil rep told me stright out that it's propaganda. There is NO difference between the two oils other than viscosity and packaging.

BTW, to get oil without any additives at all you must specifically buy non-detergent motor oil. All commercially available internal combustion engine oil (motorcycle included) contains some additives like detergents and suspension agents.

I've always used the cheap oil and as long as its changed reguraly, I've never had any problems. Saves money too. I recently used 40 weight on the bike tho... no?

I get mine at AutoZone, they all carry both the motorcycle-specific and the regular Mobil1.

    Mobil1 MC OIL

MY MC specific mobil 1 started out darker
and got even darker sooner than regular
    mobil 1 15-50

    I switched back to regular.

3000 per year annual spring oil change

Motor was torn down at 16000 everything
looked very fresh. Only replaced rings
    and valve seals.

PS I wouldn't believe either the literature
    or the rep.

There have been repeated articles from all kinds of sources that the motorcycle specific version of an oil like Mobil 1 has fewer friction reducing additives.

For car oil reducing internal engine friction is much more important. For motorcycle oil they formulate differently because lowering friction too much reduces transmission performance.

If you aren't detecting any problems with your clutch or transmission with the car oil than maybe it is OK for you but a lot of people seem to think it isn't and/or have reported problems with shifting and/or clutch slipping, etc..

Initial color and color change may not be the best way to evaluate oil either. I hear they are a little bit more scientific than that.

Edit: Apparently Moly is one of the ingredients in the car oil... the manual for my bike(s) have specifically said to use oil without Moly.

Don't worry about discoloration. The detergents in oils begin to darken almost immediately with the onset of engine heat. Viscosity retention and particle suspension are the true indicators of oil condition/longevity. Sport Rider did a really good piece on oils a few issues back.
