    Re: Monsters: Educate Me

As has been said: stay away from the 750, and 620. Blah. Get an older 900 model, or the new 6(7)96. I believe all 900's have at least adjustable forks and decent brakes, so does the 796. He 696 I think has non adjustable, just like older monsters with lower displacements. Stay away from the older s4 with the desmoquattro motor, if you want to go 4 valve get the testastretta equipped s4rs

The 1100 ds motor is absolutely awesome, I have it in my hyper. But it seems you want a smaller bike anyway.

    Re: Monsters: Educate Me

Having owned 2 monsters in the past - 620 and s2r 800, i will say that if you want to have a comfy commute and still lots of fun on the road and a good time on the track.. look for an older ss1000ds. The bang for the buck can't be beat.

I ride my 999 a lot now, and can honestly say it is more much more comfy for me (6'1) then my monsters were. I suggest you take a monster for a ride to see if it fits your body type. I still own my s2r, and hope to keep it forever - its beautiful, and more practical to ride around town.... but for long rides, the 999 takes the cake.

    Re: Monsters: Educate Me

Avoid the 900 Monsters, besides older frame/geometry, most are saddled with 750 heads and as such are choked horribly. Just when it seems like it's getting good, they sign off. Even the later EFI models are still choked by tiny valves and lazy cams. A 620 will smoke 'em if you're willing to spin the lil duckie. Also, not all 900s had adjustable forks.

The current Duc air cooled bikes are no longer part of the old DS (Dual Spark) family, they've revised the heads and gone back to single plugs per cylinder. And they got faster while they were at it.

Definitely gonna stick to the newer 696 or 796, assuming I can get the KTM sold. Those just seem like fun.

A bit less refined, but a TL1000S can be made into an excellent street bike, are pretty darn cheap and seem to be pretty reliable.

    That's why you get a 900 with heads stamped "v2" not "w2"

Anything with the new gen frame is the way to go. The 696 was comparable to the 690 performance wise. Little more power, little more weight. Lower center of gravity and seat height. Great looks an sound IMO. Entry level Duc that easily kicks ass when it comes to quick road riding and probably track days. HP heads need not apply.

you can get. track parts on it (steering damper, slider pegs, pc3,
penske shock, m4 exhaust etc etc) in case you decide not to go the duc route. if you're interested, pm me.

Richer, listen to slammp . If you go monster get an S4r. The newer ones do not have the liquid cooled motor. You can get into a 2005 2006 model kinda cheap. In my opinion the newer 1100 air cooled ones are gutless

the new 1100 motor is anything but gutless.

the 4v liquid cooled monsters are cool, and more powerful (horsepower wise, less so torque wise). but, they are more expensive to maintain if you go to the dealer, or if you do your own services, more asspain. the desmoquattro s4's had base gasket issues, and im not sure, but i think flaking rocker problems. the motor wasnt even that great. now, the testastretta s4rs is sweet...but it will be just as pricey as a newer, lighter, quicker on the track 796.

with the intention of doing track and street duty, the new 2v motor is so much easier to maintain, and has much longer service intervals than the older 4v's.

Negative. Think we're gonna put buying a bike on hold until after the wedding. Too much money flying out to pay for that stupid thing.

That it is, but still overpriced. I was heavily looking for an S4R before the 749R fell into my lap... you can find a nice one with Ohlins for $7500 all day long. Folks think their tricolore's are worth a premium, but the market doesn't seem to agree (by much). $8k would be fair for that one.

Not gonna bother posting anouther thread, and since I need to get rid of the SMC before getting a new bike, Ill just post here
Anyone have any idea what I should be asking for the SMC? The dealer offered me somewhere between 3800 and 4500 trade in, I damn near laughed. Most of you have seen it, its in good shape, mechanically been taken care of, any cosmetic damage would be fixed before sale.
