    Re: Moto consolidation

I already have quite an arsenal of toys. I have for a while. I'm not in any way or shape thinking of going down to one bike. Just fewer bikes.

Starting to consider slimming down the stable and having more multi-taskers.

The ADV model is listed at $22k at Wagners.....man. I haven't ever paid that much for any vehicle, 4 wheeled included. Though proceeds from sale of 4 of my currents should get me over halfway there.

Chip, it would be a buy it and keep it for a long time type purchase. Hence getting exactly what I want vs kinda what I want. If I'm going to do it, go big and get stuck with it for a while. Plus, they hold their value like ermahgad.

And I'd ride the shit outta it in between laying it on it's side in parking lots and at stop signs.

There is no question the bike handles its size very well. Its well balanced and you can rip in the twisties - but it is really really big and heavy. And its tall so it feels even heavier when you are pushing it around either with your arms walking or standing over it.

I agree with a lot of what was said here, its got nicer wind protection and luggage than the multi etc but if I was buying over again based on how much "dirt" I really did in the last 5 years I would be giving a lot of thought to a multi. For me thats really what it comes down to - if you want a bike to ride the wilderness side of things on longer trips the GSA is the ticket, if you want a bike to ride all over on paved roads and shorter trips there are some serious competitors.

The multi is the biggest bike I could ever see myself owning. And it flat out RIPS.

Surprisingly the old multi is small. It's ugly as sin, don't get me wrong, but it's far from a big bike.

Any interest in the KTM 1190 or the Explorer? The GSA is an awesome bike but it's TALL. I have no clue how tall you are though but I can't touch very safely on one with a 30" inseam.

I'd have to try either of them, but it's the GSA's suspension that I'm after. Like riding on a cloud.

Some of the V-Strom nuts on facebook seem to be of the opinion that the KTM 1190 Adventure is a downright bargain price wise.

I've only seen the KTM 1190 at a dealer and it looks like a sharp bike. Although sitting beside a 990 Adventure I don't really see how they think the 1190 replaces it.

Its lightyears ahead of the 990.
IIRC. Its lighter, more powerful, and the electronics like the abs and traction control are flawless.
theres an R down here at the local dealer. I may stop in today to drool on it.

That's quite the machine. Did some reading up on it last night. Not significantly cheaper than the straight GS, but way cheaper than the Adv GS.

Already got the approval from the wife (then again, she hasn't ever said no to my bike wants, hell, look at my garage). Perhaps I need to test drive a Multi, a 1190 R/Regular and a GS/Adv. I want to find the best of those 5 for me.

Somewhere on the 'tube there is video of a guy romping around that Clough place on one. At least I think it was an 1190. It was definitely a big KTM adventure toy. He did the "single tracks" that Joel and everyone else told me to stay the hell out of.

Not sure what the other differences are between the R and non R other than "knobbies" on the R

I like the traction control setting that only lets the rear spin twice as fast as tbe front. You could totally look like a hero on that on some dirt roads

It doesn't. The 1190 R replaces it; the regular 1190 Adventure complements it. It's the more street-oriented version intended to go up directly against the GS, Explorer, etc. The 990 Adventure has always kind of been in its own class, being so much more dirt-oriented, and the 1190 R continues in that vein.

The regular 1190 has 19/17 wheels; the 1190 R has 21/18. I think there may also be mapping and suspension differences. The 1190 R is definitely more dirt oriented.

For the 1190. Wheel size 19/17 vs 18/21

30MM or so ride height with different suspension non-electronically adjustable.

Different 1 piece seat where the reg model has a 2 piece

    R has smaller windscreen.

Not that I've been looking or anything.... I still think the 990 would be better than the 1190 if you were going offroad regularly.

Have you ridden the tiger? I would put that on your list to demo.

If you go to second wind BMW you can ride the gs and trumpet back to back.
