    Re: Motocamping

It looks like Dick's has a Helinox knockoff too for $49 with really good reviews... but I'll probably go Stoneman's route for now. Though as I mentioned we're going two up quite a bit, carrying two chairs could be a pain. For a pad I got a steal on Steep & Cheap on one that's basically the same as the STS pads, can't remember the brand. It isn't self inflating, but only takes a minute or two to blow up.

I also got a REALLY nice hammock set up for xmas, I haven't played with setting it up yet though. I might try rocking that if I'm solo and the weather looks good. Can't remember the brand at the moment but I was shocked at the ~$180 price tag when I looked up the model. The crazy part is it was through an anonymous internet secret santa thing, got that along with a bottle of Jefferson Reserve, another camp stove, 20 or so Lindt chocolate bars, and a few other small things... guy went all out.

For a sleeping bag I usually use a USGI Patrol bag. Used it down to freezing and that's the low limit for sure. But you can buy them barely used for $25, it packs up small and is very light (2.3 lbs), and has substantial zipper.

Have a bag for colder weather but it takes up a lot more room.

That's a cool thought actually, I never think to check military surplus for stuff they might have.

Military Surplus MSS Patrol 30 Degree Mummy Sleeping Bag Nylon Green

You can buy the whole sleeping system also. Cool thing about that is there's a Goretex cover. If the weather looks good you can skip the tent, if there's a shower you can cover up.

Military Surplus Modular Sleep System (MSS)

But I use a tent as much against bugs as for shelter.

Jetboil and a pot and skillet set
Kermit chair is the only way to go!
    Sierra designs meteor light
North Face Alegheny bag rolls up small, add an air mattress and inflatable pillow

I'm liking how the Helinox Chair Zero looks. 1lb + packable, almost light enough to take on hikes as well as the bike...

WTF is with the viglink shopping intercept/redirect? That blows.

I think that Helonix chair is what I have. It's worked quite well for me. I'm a large human. Packs down tiny. Easily lost at the bottom of my bigger panniers.

    Re: Motocamping

I haven't been paying much attention to the forum lately so I'm a little late to the party, but I'll add my two cents.

I pretty much always stick to camping on my moto trips (barring really shitty weather). For me it adds to the fun, plus I'm a cheap bastard and don't like paying for a room -- but that said, I don't mind splitting the cost of a campsite with friends rather than stealth camping, because it's nice being able to have a campfire and take a shower.

I too use a DrySpec D38 tail bag, and on longer trips the D28 too. For years I used a pair of Wolfman Expedition Dry panniers; last year I switched to a pair of Wolfman Rocky Mountain panniers (larger volume). I use a Eureka Inntorest 2 tent, Snugpak Kestrel sleeping bag, Big Agnes sleeping pad and inflatable pillow, and Alite Monarch chair. And on longer trips I carry some cooking gear.

Here's my Africa Twin packed for a two-week trip through Labrador and Newfoundland last September:

For a weekend trip, one destination I highly recommend is Rangeley Lake in Maine. Beautiful up there, great roads, and there's a nice campground in the state park on the south side of the lake.

I was actually just looking at some legal free camping spots I found online right on Rangeley lake yesterday, made a mental note that it seemed like a perfect distance away.

WTF. I'm getting it too. Apparently NESR is running Viglink (there's even a badge at the bottom of the site) and it's hijacking links.

I could be cheap and try squeezing into the Chair Mini...

Now there's a Chair One just for young children. The Chair Mini is a half-size reproduction of Chair One.

You are all better men (or women) than me. And you impress me tremendously.

In my world, if God had intended for me to camp He never would have given us the "hotel room" and "restaurant."

It's a case of "Buy once cry once." Chairs take a beating.

When a friend of mine goes to [multi-day] rallies, he stops at WalMart or a hardware store and buys a cheap folding chair for $10. Then he gives it to the campground dudes when he leaves.

Planning on going to the Frosty Nutz event late April in VT.
