    Motorcycle rentals in San Diego

Heading to San Diego in the morning with Jackie for the week for a little vacation... prob gonna rent a bike. We rented a Fuglistrada from Steve at www.sporttouringmotorcycles.com last year & it went phenominally well... considering a Concourse or FJR this time around, but it looks like his prices went up a little to 160 bucks a day.

Any other recommendations? We may end up going with Steve again, but open to other options.

I used Eagle Rider San Diego with great success a couple years ago. Rented me a Tiger 800. It went super duper well.

I'm sorry, I don't. My rental was for 6 days and I laid like 1400 miles on it. It was the most expensive part of the trip and I knew it would be going in.

I do remember I was over the mileage allowance, despite barely riding it the last 2 days of the rental. I had planned to just pay the obnoxious fee. But they didn't charge it. Dunno if it was because Eagle SD was super cool, because I'd had a longer rental, or because I'm just so damned charming.

    Peetaah!

If you want recommendations on a route text me, or if you don't have my cell, FB messenger. I rode out of SD for 2 days a few years ago, found some great stuff.

unfortunately for you, i was on a borrowed bike, not rented, so no recommendation.

Hmm...just out of curiosity...seeing how Bubba and OreoCabrio have done it -
1.) which 2 bikes would any of y'all east coasters want to rent if you came to socal to visit?

2.) how long would you want it for?

3.) how much would you pay per day?

4.) Which accessories would you want on the (ie. Bags or 2-up friendly)?

Cool Re: Motorcycle rentals in San Diego

1.) which 2 bikes would any of y'all east coasters want to rent if you came to socal to visit?
Something that I do not own... I was looking to choose between a Sportbike (like I did the Duc 899) or a sport touring .

2.) how long would you want it for?
Did not wait at all. Connected via email/phone 2 days before I few to SoCal. For 50$ the gentlemen from rentaducati came an picked up the bike from Carlsbad (1h north of San Diego , where I was supposed to drop it).

3.) how much would you pay per day?
for the 899 , I payed 200/day including insurance, taxes, unlimited miles etc . The insurance on the 899 had a 2k deductible that I put as a deposit.

4.) Which accessories would you want on the (ie. Bags or 2-up friendly)
Tailbag and radar detector (though I either lucked out or So Cal cops do not care if u go around 20-30mph over the limit).

Was fun .. I deff would will do it again when I have the time + funds

    Motorcycle rentals in San Diego

Well, we ended up renting from a place called "Renty". It was kind of a sketch place but it got the job done.

Got a BMW R1100S for just 70 bucks for a 24hr period and it worked out perfectly.

The people we stayed with owned a goldwing so the husband took us on a private tour starting at their place in Mira Mesa, up to Julien for some apple pie n ice cream, then up one side of Palomar Mountain and back down the other.

If I were looking to get into the bike rental business, I'd have a little variety of good bank for the buck bikes... A larger sport touring machine (Concourse, FJR, but not a goldwing ($, size and complexity)), a mid sized sport touring machine (an older Multistrada or some kind of BMW boxer, maybe a V strom), a smaller sporty bike like a Monster or an SV650, and if I had a good business going and could sustain a little more risk, an R1 or something for the squids.

Coincidentally, this is kinda how I'd like my garage to look like anyway.

My only two motorcycle rental experiences were for less than 24 hours, but we had options to rent for longer. I think most people

I paid 70 bucks for one day for the R1100S that we rented but that's way cheaper than any other place I could find.

Re: Motorcycle rentals in San Diego

$70 is a steal. Nice find. Sounds & looks like you two had sum fun!

If I ever rent again, it'll probably be a wing or an uber tourer harley, ie an ultra or road king. One of my disappointments with Eagle Rider was they advertised the ADV bikes as "with luggage". Also I selected a Tiger 1050. Truth told, I thought the brand new Tiger 800 they handed me was an upgrade over the 1050. But there were no bags. I mentioned it to the staff person checking me out on the bike and her reaction was basically "meh, I dunno". Fortunately I'm such a worrier I had planned around it and had luggage that would mount to the bike anyway. But it was a let down. So if I ever do it again it will be on a bike that has hard luggage that isn't optional.

I have no interest in renting smaller, sportier bikes.

I sure as hell don't have any interest in renting clapped out, 30 year old 2-stroke dirt bikes of questionable legality. Just in case you were curious.

Hmm....I will do more research (to see if it's out there) and feed it back to the companies (if it's not)

CA is such a bitchin place to ride in one's lifetime...had a few people ask about coming...I want to know (and try!) All the options

    $70 is definitely worth it...good findings Ore-yo

Edit - you sure bubba? I can throw in an FZR600 of questionable suspension design too LOlOL. But naah...I saw a dude renting plated Ktm 450-500's for $150-175/day ... That's the ticket!

Actually your stable looks business worthy srz400's and vstorms would be maintenance friendly and capable of quite a bit...but I dunno if people would pay much for em

I liked it. I was hoping for something larger & comfier for Jackie (the rear seat was a bit of a brick), but luckily she was able to jump onto the back of a Goldwing for the majority of the ride, leaving me to have some fun in the corners riding solo.

Power was very linear. Not huge power, but solid enough and good delivery.
The servo actuated ABS brakes were actually quite responsive.
Handling was pretty decent. Tipped in easily and super neutral mid corner, which I like.
Suspension was good for a sport tourer.

That's not to say it wasn't without its drawbacks, but overall I was pretty happy with it.

1.) which 2 bikes would any of y'all east coasters want to rent if you came to socal to visit?
In a perfect world, a MOTUS. In a more realistic world, a HyperStrada would be about perfect. Or any of a number of sport-tourers -- MG Norge, MultiStrada, Caponord, R1200ST or R1200RT, K1600GT, VFR1200F, Sprint or Trophy, Concours -- all-around capable bikes that can handle most duties.

It depends on the intent and the expected destinations. A few years ago, I rented a Road King for the day for my wife and me to go sightseeing on Maui. It was perfect -- great for toodling around two-up on an island where the speed limits are 35mph or less everywhere.

2.) how long would you want it for?
If in CA, I'm usually there for at least a week or two.

3.) how much would you pay per day?
Depends a lot on the bike, and on the duration. $200 a day is OK for a day or two, but that really adds up for a week or two. I think motorcycle rentals should be able to get a pretty good discount for longer term rental periods. But it depends on the bike. I'd pay double for a MOTUS.

There used to be a rental place in LA that had a D16RR Desmosedici for rent, for about $600 a day, with a $30K damage deposit. I was tempted, and had I had ready access to that much for the deposit, I would have done that for a couple of days -- ride up the PCH for as long as I could physically stand it, sleep somewhere, and ride back.

4.) Which accessories would you want on the (ie. Bags or 2-up friendly)?
Yes, to both. Bags very useful, two-up should be at least adequate for a decent size passenger. A GPS option would be very cool.

In a perfect world, gear rental would be great. In Hawai'i, the HD rental had no gear. Fortunately I had thought to ask before we left, so we brought our gear with us. On the cruise ship, that wasn't a big deal, but if you're flying in, packing your gear is kind of a PITA.

coolio...seems like the big bike segment already kinda exists...eaglerider has a road king for $149/day, gold wing for $179, R1200RT...but no 'strada or smaller/sporty...although a vstorm and sv650 could fit that bill

I need to compile them all into some sort of list...then rent all the bikes "for research"

Re: Motorcycle rentals in San Diego

Nobody is gunna pay to rent either an SV or DL650. Those are girls bikes with no soul. People want exotic, flashy shit on vacation.

Riding the tiger in CA I did get 105948 times more comments about it. A lot were "I had a triumph back in the day". My first thought was always "and it was nothing like this machine at all!" But lifestyle machines like that do get people talking. By the same extension I think those are the only machines that would rent well; lifestyle products where renters can live out some sort of "I always wanted one of these" fantasies. Regardless of how they perform, non-premium Japanese machines are probably not going to rent well.

What's weird is I saw the complete opposite overseas. In NZ most of the rental stables I saw were packed with utilitarian mounts like the DL650, WR250, etc.

PSST... AMA card provides discounts. i rented a ST1300 from eagle rider HONDA for 3 day 1400 miles fro about $110/day. of course bags were included. I mentioned up front i'll probably be doing 500 miles a day and they did not mind.

I rented a GS1200 from Moto Quest in Washington. No issues with 500 miles a day and came with the adventure bags and a tank bag. think it was $125/day

This is probably very accurate in America.

In NZ, and most other countries, a *lot* more people ride motorcycles for primary transportation, so there's also a market for transportation-type bikes to rent. In the U.S., more than 90% of bikes are toys. Last year, I had a 2-month project in CA, and didn't have time to ride my bike out there for it. If I could have rented a basic bike for a couple of months, for not much more than renting a car, I'd have been happy to do it. But at 5x the price, not so much. Fortunately for me, I had a friend out there with extra bikes; he lent me a '91 Moto Guzzi with about 100K on it for the duration, which was great fun.
