Go to Brooklyn. Or probably any other good-sized city.

hmm...you've got a point there...I remember going to a concert at the Middle East (concert venue) when I lived in Boston and saw a few cafe racers and scooters parked in front

now that I live back outside the city, I see more 20 and 30 year old males in hoodies and jeans on late model sport bikes rather than hipsters

    interesting read regardless...and although I'm not married-and-broke yet (instead I'm a student-and-broke), when I get there, I'm sure I'll relate a lot more

I love cafe racers, and it's a shame that they've begun to get equated with hipsters. More often than not, a hipster with a cafe-esque bike got it that way from someone else. They just seem to think '70s UJMs are cool for whatever reason, and in most cases they don't even know what a cafe racer is (and probably think their bike came stock that way).

If I were to build a cafe bike, I would pick a CB750 over anything the Brits had/have to offer. Sorry, but to me, price, smoothness and reliability easily trump oil leaks, vibrations, and Lucas Electrics.
I will hand it to you, most people don't know what a cafe bike is. When one of my friends bought what he said was a CM450 "cafe racer" I was very much surprised to see that it was indeed a bobber.

Yeah, CB750s make nice cafe racers, but they're not the most interesting bikes. I think I'd be inclined to pick a CB450 twin, a CX500, or a Yamaha SR500.

As for British bikes... a Norton restoration would be the way to go. Eliminate all the Lucas electrics and they're actually good bikes. But the easier thing to do is just get a Hinckley Triumph (Bonneville or Thunderbird Sport) -- as reliable as Japanese bikes, but lots more personality.

You are hanging with the wrong crowd of them, then. the saying about airhead riders is that the only thing cheap on the bike is the rider.

Damn the HFL paywall. I can't view the images because I'm not a subscriber...

There are a ton of hipster-riders up here in portland. They all seem to love small-bore moped-ish cafe things for some reason. I don't think plaid flannel and a bandanna will protect you from even 30mph road rash!
