Side mount license plate holder legal in Mass?

Just wondering if anyone knew if side mount/axle mount license plate holders are legal in Mass. I'm trying to clean up my tail and thought it might have a cleaner look with a side mount license plate.

just ride with it under your rearseat and tell the cop when he pulls you over that it just fell off at your last posing point. It will probaly be just as effective.

The only legal one I know of is the one that comes stock on the HD Nightster, and I'm going to guess it's only legal on the bike it came on. That's it.

Actually it IS legal if you leave it the same orientation it would be under the tail (you can't turn it sideways to make it fit better. You can chance it - I did last year - and I made it to August before I got pulled over and yelled at on 495.

Sorry idrathrberidin but according to the state trooper i spoke with as well as the registry it is legal. But for clarification, by "side mount" we're not talking about the side of the bike it's a plate not a frame slider.
If it's mounted at the rear of the bike it's visible and legal.

This doesn't make sense to me... isn't the original poster asking about "side mounting" the plate? no one is questioning whether or not mounting the plate in the rear is legal... he is asking if side mounting it is... which in my experience with and translation of:

"side mounting" the plate as he asked about is illegal... even if axel mounted... the plate would be obscured from reasonable view unless I was on the side of the bike the plate was sticking out of....

I'm not saying that I am right, actually according to what VinceF2 posted I am not - and it is illegal. But it seems like it is accepted practice, by law enforcement to allow side mounted plates so long as they are not sideways. I did ride almost all of last summer with a sideways one mounted to my swingarm and did not have a problem until sometime in August. There were plenty of times that I rode directly in front of troopers on the way to/from work and had no issue. Even when I was pulled over I did not get a ticket, just a stern warning that it was illegal and either needed to be flipped horizontally or moved to the undertail.

It's like anything else, you make a personal choice and you weigh in the risks. 9 times out of 10 if your a responsible rider no one is going to bother you for the plate. It's just that 10th time that you need to worry about.

There are a lot of things we do to our bikes that are "illegal," that is one thing I would be very careful messing around with. I had my plate bracket a little too horizontal for an officer's liking last year and got a talking too. Those are the types of things that are just begging to be harrassed for, why give them a reason?
