    MSF INSTRUCTORS

Are you one? Do you know one? Want to become one?

As many of you know I am in the Army. It is my full time job now and I have taken on additional duties to help our Safety office with military motorcyclists and there meeting Army regulations.

To that end I have started a motorcycle club, I started a Chapter of the Green Knights. Basically military riders.

Enough of the backround and straight to my point. We have 1 MSF instructor, Randy Loso and he is swamped. We in the military HAVE to take a MSF course to meet Army Regs, be it Beginner or ERC (I took the ERC last year). The military is supposed to provide those courses free of charge.

I was wondering if there are any MSF instructors that would be so kind as to come up and help Randy with a course or put on a ERC (those are only 1 day). It would really help the folks out up here and it would help me by showing that I am doing my part to get people trained.

If you are an MSF instructor could you respond in this thread please. I would like to also start a discussion on the courses and safety in general.

    Thanks for your time.

I'm very retired from it. It has to be about 8 years now. I would have to start from scratch. Good to see you are invloved with the program. I think, and indeed hope, more of the enthusiasts here would get involved with the MSF as it is very good for the sport, and may help prevent some of the stuff we don't like to see. I hope you have good luck finding someone. Where are you located? I can give you the NH's phone number{603-271-7000}. Maybe you can place a call and get a hold of some of the their instructors. Also NH has a privately run program too. M.O.S.T., I think it is called. Maybe they have some instructors that might like to help. Bob Lavoie was the head dude and chief instructor. I hope it might help.

    I see.

I wanted to take the instructor course this year but with racing and stuff...

    Maybe next year.

I will get the schedule of classes. If anyone is interested or can come up and put one on that would be great! You can even do your own class. Just tell me when you can come up and I will make sure there are students.

I supposed to be in the program this summer. I start as a range aid first until the rider-coach class comes. To my knowledge, they have not set the dates for the class yet. As a matter of fact, they are thinking of making the range-aid thing a prerequisite to becoming a rider-coach in the sate of NH.

    12 years for me.

You should arrange with the local MSF coordinator to get your troops trained.

There is no need for military to be trained together. In Western MA, we make the regular classes available to military. So, miltiary and civilians are mixed together.

The problem is cost. The military is supposed to provide the course to members for free. There is currently no budget. (Imagine that)

We have an instructor that does it for the Air Guard side (he is funded through the Air guard, they have been far ahead of the Army for years) but none for the Army side. I plan on filling that void but I have to get to a class (of which there are none up here, one a year and it is full).

I didn't know what it costs for someone to put on a course, I don't even know what it costs per student (I did my ERC for free). I just know that our 1 instructor was looking for some help, possibly to do more classes.

If anyone wants his contact info I can give it to you.

I don't have a lot of the specifics yet. You have to apply and get selected to even take the Rider-Coach training course. It is 70 hours of training to become a Rider-Coach. Until you complete the course, you can only be a range aid.

So if you get hired, you can work as a range aid until you pass the training program. I've already had a couple of interviews and they said with a wink , not to worry about whether I was getting hired or not.

If you want to apply, you better do it yesterday. Contact the NH Dept of Safety and go get an application and a copy of your driving record to turn in to them. Funny thing is that when you go and get your driving record... it costs 10 bucks to get it. You then walk about 5 steps to the right of that desk and give it to another person. I mean really... THEY ALREADY HAVE YOUR INFO IN THE FIRST PLACE!! It just takes 10 bucks and your own two feet to make it between desks that are almost close enough to touch at the same time.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled program.....

We ended up nearer 100 hours not including homework and it is a serious bootcamp. Be prepared to work very hard, do tons of homework and you'll have to be able to demonstrate teaching a classroom and range in front of several ridercoach trainers and people from the RMV, all of whom are evaluating you and giving you no-bullshit critical evaluation. At times, the stress was really showing on a few of the group.

    derek
