I am interested in getting a bike, I live in rhode island. It probably won't be until next spring or summer, but I figured I would post my potential plans to see if any of you had any good ideas to add. I want to take a motorcycle safety course, and then probably buy a kawasaki ninja 500r/ex500. I also want to get riding gear like a nice jacket and pants, something that I could use when its cooler, but also use in the summer when hot, I won't be riding in winters or cold weather. Gloves and helmet of course, and I would imagine boots as well. how does all of this sound? anyone know of any other bikes that would suit me well? from what I've read the ninja 500r is a good bike to start on.
    thanks

Suzuki Gs500, Vfr 500 interceptor, 86-89 Fz600 (air cooled=simple and light weight), and LOTS of others just gotta find the right one in the RIGHT condition for the price you can afford

    get an SV!

as for gear, i've got a Joe Rocket Meteor jacket... it's served me well from the hight 30s to the low 90s. (all within 2 weeks, heh) i should have my JR Ballistic pants by tuesday...
JR cordura is pretty easy on the wallet, as gear goes. (and like Jankster reccomends, it has a removable lining, vents, and 'armor')
sounds like ya got the right idea, tho. good luck, and hope ta see you on the road soon.

I think the Suzuki GS500e is perfect.(note sig)Heh. Go to the major makers web-sites. I know there are small cruisers out there but don't know names or cc's or stuff. Cruisers= lower seat height. Tour Master makes nice affordable weatherproof jackets and pants and stuff. Do a search for motorcycle apparel, you'll get the phone book, look for removable liners in jackets w/vents and armour(pads). Leather or Cordura. As for helmets remember: if you have a $10 head, buy a $10 helmet!heh. Help? Need more? Come on guys welcome Igneous to the flock!!

I am thinking about finding one of those bikes used, probably anywhere from 2 to 3 grand or so, I think thats where my budget is set for now. Have you done anything to your passat? I drive a 95 golf sport.

http://www.beginnerbikes.com/ has a bunch of ideas for entry level bikes as well... maybe a wee bit conservative, but fairly accurate.

Just don't get a cruiser if you're tall.

TWrayinMA kind of told me last weekend that I look like a monkey humping a football on my SV...

If I had a cruser I could pedal around with my knees on the ground at stoplights. I almost bought a Vulcan 500, I'm glad I got the SV instead, I would have ended up strapping a bunch of phone books onto the seat of the Vulcan.

They are way too low for a tall person, and there is no friggin way you'll be able to stand up or shift your weight around on the seat.

a golf sport is just a gti 8v, except they didnt make gti 8v's in 95, they made the golf sport instead. Mine has a TT chip, TT adjustable cam gear and cam, neuspeed p flo, turn 2 poly motor mount, magnaflow catback exhaust, weitec GT 40 mm suspension kit, autotech front upper strut bar, and bonrath single wiper
