    Nhms fuel mistake

I bought fuel at nhms during today's TTD...now my 99 r6 is backfiring
And twice the engine stalled during two separate sessions.....my r6 is not FI...if that makes any difference.....I think it is running lean due to the 98 octane.......can I just dilute the leftover gas in the tank with 87 octane? So it will run normal again?

    Re: Nhms fuel mistake

I thought you could only get backfiring if you have fuel of too little octane, not too high...

I would think that the only problem would be too much fuel burnt? You certainly could dilute gas down though......

I don't know a thing about carbs though, this is just experience from car tuning I'm babbling about.

    Re: Nhms fuel mistake

Maybe I sounded like it was all the time....I'd like to clarify myself....it only backfired twice under heavy acceleration....approx 13k rpm, and the other during downshift from 3rd to second on turn 11....then it stalled......it's running fine now at idle....but I know it will do it again on my next track day.....it's a dedicated track bike so I can't test it on the road.

This is the first time I did this.....So I guess I'll stick with 93 octane.....
I swear I did not know it was 9.90 per gallon.....I had sticker shock...I had 20.00 bucks in my hand...so I had to put it on my debit card.
The kid already filled the can, too late or me to back out..lol

    Re: Nhms fuel mistake

Im not even sure i would run 93, its a 99 r6, i would doubt the compression is super high, you may be better running 87 or 89

    Re: Nhms fuel mistake

Yeah you're better off running 87 all the time. You want to run the lowest octane you can without getting detonation. You get the best power that way. I run nothing but 87 in my '02 R6 with slightly higher compression with no issues.

As far as the backfiring, the high octane isn't gonna cause that. If the gas has some kind of contaminants in it, i.e. water, it could though.

    Re: Nhms fuel mistake

It sounds like you got water in there to me too. I would siphon your tank out and look at it. The owner's manual for your bike probably says 87 and that's what you should put in it, even at a track day.

I am no expert on this stuff, but I though too high an octane is just as bad as too low?

I didn't realize it was 98 octane either... or that expensive!

Guess i will have to keep reminding people to bring their own fuel.

    Re: Nhms fuel mistake

I would be really surprised to hear that running a tank full of 93, 87 or anything inbetween would make a noticable difference in a stock street bike. In all my riding on all my bikes I've had to mix various grades and have never noticed a difference.

If it's really the fuel, I'd agree that it could be water.

It could also be a leak in the exhaust somewhere. I've had that happen when a header nut loosened up and also once when the access port came out on the mid pipe...

You won't really notice it as far as throttle response or the way the motor sounds but using high octane causes excessive carbon build up

Yeah, but this stuff is 98 octane... so I believe it has a higher ignition point?

My current bike is the first bike I've owned that prefers 93 (as opposed to 87). I get slight "cut outs" going down the front straight with the lower octane. (unless that was a bad batch of gas?)

    Re: Nhms fuel mistake

i would like to think that water is not the cause...i have confidence in the fuel quality
at NHMS....why wouldnt I, its a NASCAR track.

i would like to think that it was the high octane that caused this....i will dilute with 87 octane and go from there.

    thanks guys.

    Re: Nhms fuel mistake

fill it with 87 call it a day. should dilute it enough.

your bike probably couldn't burn the 98 octane very well so it might have fired up in your exhaust hence the back fires

if you're really worried about it drain it and mix it in your car with a full tank. then fill the bike up.
