but to answer your question: just put good tires on it
I finally got the rentech rack installed:

super light, felt well constructed, 2 bolts on the passenger grab bar location, 2 clamps on the frame, and done. I even rode to the airport today w' backpack/luggage combo bag. When I got the airport, the helmet, jacket, knee guards, gloves, and vest stash into the top case. I just wear the Dainese RR boots under sweat pants round trip. Then the rest of my riding gear is available for the ride home when I get back...the central/structure lot is $40/day ($200 saved)! I saved 45 mins+ lane splitting, no need to budget time for a shuttle from the economy parking lot, and over 44mpg vs. the 13mpg on my truck. This is my hot setup for quick trips to see the folks.
Now to install the corbin seat, some sort of cruise control, some jig for highway pegs, a phone charger, and should be good for longer rides...next year - good tires, then track days.
Plus, it’s like male birth control too.

Cause some generous soul decided it wanted a new home where it would be loved and cared for.
It's needing a lot at this point. All the brakes need to be rebuilt. Throttle cable is frozen. Carbs need to be rebuilt. Transmission won't shift. All the things you'd expect for sitting untouched for 10+ years. BUT, it has a good EBC floating rotor up front and a Fox shock out back. So hey, why not?
Re: Ninja 500r 2005 as track bike
Hmm...what keeps the transmission from shifting?
Re: Ninja 500r 2005 as track bike
Probably corrosion on the shifter cogs or something. No idea. We'll open it up and take a look.

Adjusted to reflect purchasing power from sale price of Ninja.

Already have a Penske and rearsets for the SV....

Re: Ninja 500r 2005 as track bike
Agreed, splitting is a PITA
You are usually the first one to tell me - sell it and put it into a better bike...then send me the shock and the brake setup :hellyeah:

is it like the EX250 where it wont shift unless the back wheel is moving? When i first got the 2fiddy it would go into first and that was it. I read up and found it had
a 'feature' that wouldn't allow you to shift anywhere but neutral unless you were moving. If you part it out wanna sell the rear shock?
Re: Ninja 500r 2005 as track bike
That’s Kawasaki’s “Positive Neutral Finder” - if you’re stopped, you can only shift between first and neutral, can’t shift up into second.
Re: Ninja 500r 2005 as track bike
No, that isn't the case. First thing I tried is rocking the wheel while trying to shift. Shifting internals are locked up.
In other news, while at the TTD event in Thompson yesterday/Sunday, what comes rolling through tech? BOTH of my old EX500 racebikes. Guy riding my old A bike was doing great in Blue too!
Re: Ninja 500r 2005 as track bike
Ya guys I am pretty sure Iglu knows how to rock a bike back and forth :dunno:
Cool to see your old bikes back out there! Can’t kill some of these bikes :hellyeah:
Did you offer to trade him

That is by far the best looking EX I’ve ever seen.

Riding into the danger zoneeeee
Yeah, 4ish months?
I have a parking spot for my truck and moved to the burbs so the Ninja is street leisure duty now instead of commuter. Some days I actually cycle to work...like on a bicycle
Every “first” ride I keep her at 7-8k cruising just to get the darn thing to move  but after you get used to it, she is very adequate for cruise duty
2020 more day rides, and hopefully a solo overnighter and/or hopefully a camp night off the bike :hellyeah:
And maybe, just maybe a track day!?!? I dunno
Re: Ninja 500r 2005 as track bike
first off - I missed this:

this bike is more than enough for the street...has enough power to get ahead of cars...cruise at 80-90mph...and pass people on the freeway
small, nimble, and doesn't overheat in stop-and-go coastal cruises through beach areas

the only issue I had was sore tush on the hot spots
even w' 30-40 min stops, butt stretches, and band exercises, after 130ish miles I was moving around a lot on the seat to be comfortable...time to install the corbin
Re: Ninja 500r 2005 as track bike
Yeah, but how is it as a trackday bike?
Re: Ninja 500r 2005 as track bike
dammit
2021
I already talked to a mechanic that races the 250's and he is willing to get the 500R track ready...he said new chain/sprockets/carb clean/tires at a minimum. So I may consider hitting tracks once I burn my current wear items, then put fresh front/rear tires that are actually sticky (not shinkos)...then *just* use it for track days (no street in between) until those components wear out.
but low key, I am more excited about the low/mid range cylinder port job that's being done at millennium on the YZ250 right now, go -1/+2, and maybe a FWW and/or 36mm Keihin carb for the YZ for 2020...plus I have some 90/10 tires that I'd like to try at the flat track...and I haven't been to sumo in years...and spring/fall are the perfect temps for touring rides...so ya...too much riding to do, not enough time.

just needed to swap the brackets w' 4 screws
tried a Corbin on my first street bike ('89 Ninja 600R) years ago and thought it was at least better than stock
Re: Ninja 500r 2005 as track bike
Be prepared for a LONG break in time before distance on that seat is comfy.

Re: Ninja 500r 2005 as track bike
alright, next ride coming up soon...roughly 200ish miles (?) up through Big Bear
goal is to get these done + YZ stuff on the one day off it's not-raining:
-cruise control
-GoPro chin mount (ProShotCam)
-Add-a-fuse + phone charger
-LED brake light on top case
-rim reflectors
dunno which cruise control is best...just googled ex500.com and "Vista Cruise Control" popped up...$30ish, ordered up w' the add a fuse, auto charger, and 12V receptacle
next longer(ish) ride will be to Vegas and back....then by fall, when it cools off again, I'd like to do some touring starting from the Vegas area
