No officer it's supposed to be like that...

Anyone else have issues with Yamaha single light low beam? Do you ride with highbeam on during the day? I ride an FZ6 and had a cop tell me that my headlight was out, after a nice 20 minute discussion he told me he didn't buy the dealer would sell it that way but let me off with a warning.

I don't ride a Yamaha, but my Kawasaki ZX6R does the same thing, one beam for low and the other one flicks on when I hit my high beams.....

In general though I have gotten in the habbit of riding with my high's on all the time because I get noticed and when it starts to get a bit dark out I want it on all the time. And ya, i might be an ass hole to the cars on the road, but generally I don't turn it back down to low in any circumstance. I don't find my lows to be bright enough if I am doing more than 30-35ish. Maybe it's just me though.

yea alot of sportbikes are designed that way. everyone thinks its like a car. just nod and keep on moving because if you try to explain it to everyone youll never actually get to ride.

I always ride with my brights on (except after dark with oncoming traffic). Partly for visibility, I figure every little bit helps, and partly because I'm tired of the headlight out comments.

yeah, my tiger has one low beam on the left and the high on the right.
I also ride during the day with my high beam on unless it is on a ride with other bikes and I'm behind someone all the time.

same with mine, i keep on the high beam most of the time though.

You can always modify your light to have 2 lows and 1 high beam. there is a thread on 600RR.net on how to do it for Honda's, but I'm sure it would work for any bike though.

You could always respond with "Sure, you can give me that warning, but I will be calling your supervisor to make sure that he knows that you have to go back to school to learn "The Law"."

That is a stupid officer. Almost every sport bike on the road today has that same coinfiguration. He must have been hiding under a rock for the last 10 years. You should have pointed out that you weren't wearing your seatbelt either.

I absolutely DO NOT agree with him pulling you over for THAT. But, it's impossible for every cop to know the working order of EVERY vehicle out there. Just impossible...

Mine's the same, I ride w/ HB's on all the time unless I'm with a bunch of bikes. I usually turn them off if I'm following a car at night.

Easy Fix with the FZ6... the FZ6 has an H7 for a low beam, but an H4 for the high beam. The H4 is a dual filament bulb and is only wired up to turn on the high beam filament. If you run a single wire from the low beam side over and wire it to turn on the low beam filament when the low beams are on then you will not only have low beams on both sides, but you will be amazed at how much more viasbility you gain on the right side of the road...

Re: No officer it's supposed to be like that...

i had a CT cop tell me it was illegal to ride with brights on during the day because, 'you blind other drivers'. i watched him flag down and pull over a rider on RT7 just because of the brights, said he was going to ticket the guy but decided not to.

i told him a lot of riders use high beams because car drivers dont see bikes. he wasnt buying it. ah, well...

I ride with my brights on during the day and only revert to low beams at dusk.

I have searched and not found a law in MA that I'm breaking (during the day)

Re: No officer it's supposed to be like that...

I generally keep the highs on all the time, even at night because the low beam (projector with an H9 bulb) shines onto the surface only about 20 feet in front of me and it's pretty easy to over ride that without even breaking the limit IF it's dark enough out, plus the oncoming vehicles blind ya just the same.

I really wondered how long it would be before I got pulled and told a bulb was out, but it hasn't happened.

On another note, I don't like the "new" set up most manufacturers are using now. The old school side by side fronts use to light up the night a lot better than these stupid cyclops looking nightmares of today. Have to get a HID kit I guess...but even that is still going to shut the high beam off and make it look like a bulb is out.

Can you see / reach the harness for the bulb? I can only see one of mine but if you can, you could point to it and show the officer it only has 2 wires...2 wires means on or off.

Re: No officer it's supposed to be like that...

I've had this happen to me twice on my zx6r. Once in the early morning it was 6:30 am cop rode up behind me and said that I had a head light out since all he seen was one HID I told him that the bike rides with one low one high he didn’t believe me and said to just get it fixed blah blah blah and I was on my way. Sadly enough later that night I was pulled over by a statie on 93. As soon as I jumped on the highway he threw the lights on. I asked why I was being stopped he said I had a headlight out. I explained to him that its my low beam and that it only turns both on with the high beam. He said in his exact words " you should just ride with the high beams its not that much of a difference with those bright bulbs and the bike looks cooler " and sent me on my way. Ever since I just avoid the problem with idiot cops and ride with both on Just my .2

what's it matter? Doesn't the law only require one anyway?

I get the same thing, never been pulled over for it though.

I think the law would require all the lights to work.

The whole 1 headlight thing started in europe. it was so at night people didnt mistake a bike for a car that would essentially appear to be farther away than the bike actually is
