    Oh Deer!

Since there aren't too many riding days left this season, and today's supposed to be a high of 68, I decided to ride into work with the wife today.

We leave for work at 5:30am and take 495N to the Pike east.

While moving into the passing lane, I spotted a deer not 3 feet from the edge of the road standing dead still and I got a littel paranoid that he'd run right out in front of me.

After that initial shock, and not 2 miles later, another deer is running along the road, with traffic.

Once more, another 2 miles up, I see another one running, this time across the median, headed toward my lane, but ended up behind me.

Talk about a wake-up call . . . . . . I was doing maybe 80 when I saw the first one and ended up at 65-70 after spotting the third one.

Anyone else ever see any deer that close while riding?

    Oh Deer!

I don't think I have seen one while riding, but I've had rabbits and other critters jump right in front of my wheel going down a steep road in a mountain. Scarry...

Not sure about here in the state, but in Quebec it's hunting season, the guys are everywhere hunting for them, and they come out of the woods near highways, roads, houses...you gotta slow down this time of the season, driving or riding. We've seen little groups of them last weekend, here and there, gathering close to the roads.

    Oh Deer!

I have seen deer pretty close on the median on 495 before, praying to god they don't decide to move in front of me!

495 is actually loaded with deer, but they seem to be smart enough to leave the road before 6 am

Deers are often seen near roads at dusk and dawn, rarely seen them otherwise.

They are EVERYWHERE... as long as you're not panicing fine, but don't ever think they aren't waiting in the woods at all times, just salivating at the thought of jumping in front of you.

I definitely cannot count the # of deer I've seen in the road while riding. I've seen 3 moose and 1 black bear, but the # of deer is uncountable.

I'm way more freaked out when I'm on my bicycle.. at least on the motorcycle it's all over quickly. On the bicycle you have no real way of getting way from them unless you're going down a hill.

I saw one the other day... darted across about 200 yards in front of me... so I get on the brakes just in case. Sure enough there was another one in the woods. (I was crawling at this point... maybe 20 mph on a 40 mph road, nobody behind me, luckily)... Aaaaanyway, Deer #2 freaks and decides to go for it right as I'm rolling by. Fucker almost ran right into me. I've worried about hitting a deer... never really worried too much about getting hit by one. At least it was a doe.

Yah that's the big fear... there are always a ton of them when they're around.

I've seen 15 at once. That was in Carlisle not far from Motomarket about 2 years ago. I've seen 5 at once in Waltham.. about 1/4 mile from 128.

My big worry is one of them hits me from the side on my bicycle while I'm going uphill.. you're totally vulnerable then and if they were running hard they'd hit you like an NFL linebacker. I'm not sure it'd be any better on the motorcycle but at least on the MC you're geared up and you weigh 600lbs total instead of 200lbs.

highways are the most likely place you will see a deer, it's miles & miles of perfect habitat

deer are edge habitat creatures, they like being on the edge of the woods, the DOT provides perfect browse along side the highway and in the median

when i lived in PA we had a herd in our yard. We counted 38 deer in our property alone. I never seen anything like it in my life and if I was a hunter I would have had a field day! What was really cool is when they all deciceded to run at once across the road. Imagine seeing that run in front of you on the bike.

    Oh Deer!

Had a fawn come out in front of me just as you enter Canaan NH on 118. Thankfully I was already moving pretty slow as I was just coming into the town. A few miles back while I was doing my best in the corners would have sucked.

I pulled over and tried to get the camera out, but he was gone before I could.

Also on Route 16 just north of Berlin, NH (we were heading south into Berlin) I rounded a corner to see a Jeep pointed in the wrong direction on my side of the road. When we got closer we saw what they were looking at. A moose!

We slowly went by, but there was a slight incline in teh road and my friend on a 636 let out the clutch and the moose must have jumped 5ft sideways and went back in the woods. Thats a big animal looking up from the seat of a bike.

lived in New England for about 8 years now and I still have never seen a wild moose. That's gotta be cool site.

Saw a blue whale once tho if that counts. Little bigger than a moose.

I think you're probably right in Northern NH and most of VT and Maine.

However eastern MA we've created a perfect place for them even better then the highways... a near 100% patchwork of forest & lawn.

Hence all the efforts to teach people how to plant landscaping that deer won't eat.

If you haven't seen a Moose just go ride around in the White Mountain national forest. I saw one riding on the Kanc in 2004, and another one in 2005 on Rt. 16 just north of Gorham. The 3rd was in Maine right near the Kennebec river.

The deer also hang out a little deeper in the forest when they're not eating (dawn, noon, dusk). That's where I see them mountain biking. I'll usually roll right up to them focused on the trail and then have an "Oh shit" moment as I realize I'm surrounded. If it weren't for the danger of hitting someone else deer hunting on a mountain bike could be a pretty fun way to hunt I bet. Maybe try and take em down with a big pistol after getting close.

    Oh Deer!

I had the bike out on 57 in Granville hading east trying to outrun the rain back to Springfield one day this summer. I get stuck behind 2 cars and Im thinking about shooting around both of them when I see a black lab run out into the road and get hit by the lead car. The car that hit it pulls over, and the car behind it just goes by like nothing happened, so I pull over to stop.

I start talking to the lady and she tells me it was a bear. Her car was fine but there was bear shit on the bumper. SO she takes off and leaves me there alone in the woods with an injured bear somewhere.

I've never gotten my gear on so fast in my life.

    Oh Deer!

One year for Laconia a few of us stayed in the White Mountains. We had left the Weirs at about 3am to head back north and on 113 just before 16 we had an encounter with a dear and a moose about 100 feet apart. If the deer didn't tuck his front end and lowside while approaching us I coulda poked it in the eye. Next I almost used the mooses junk as a speed bag. Talk about close.

Seperate occasion: had a few moose cross infront while in the Great North Woods of NH.

    Yip, many times...

In fact, I had one land on top of my cage last year, just before Thanksgiving. Fucker lept off an embankment ONTO the hood of my old Fag Wagon....I mean Outback. Over $4K in damage, if I remember...

But yeah. I've had MANY close calls riding...

If you don't mind taking a long ride ...

Go to Knowles Corner after taking the Patten/Sherman exit on I-95 and drive north on Route 11 in Maine at dusk ...

I have seen as many as 30 - 40 moose in one ride on the way to Eagle Lake. Seeing one or two is interesting ... more than that is downright fucking scary. I whiteknuckled it going 35 mph till I got out of the woods around Portage.

Here is the funny thing about hitting a moose with a cage or pickup, if you hit them going 70 mph, they roll right over your vehicle, if you hit the brakes ... they go right through the windshield.

Either way, 1200 to 1500 pounds of stupid animal standing by the
road needs to be respected and avoided.

Yup. I was there last weekend. I go about every other month, sometimes more often, sometimes longer periods without going. My family and my husband's are all scattered over the province. (Montreal, Sherbrooke, St-Georges, Quebec city, Drummondville, etc.)
