actually not much makes me go "oh shit" anymore, I'm kinda oblibious sometimes, I've discovered that not reacting has probably saved me a few times

I don't have a lot of close calls I leave plenty of following distance and I've encountered just about everything mentioned in this thread.
But I don't react real strongly or get an adrenaline rush or anything, and I agree I think that has saved me a few times. I know there are some things you can't avoid such as moose, etc.. but when something like that happens I very calmly do what is needed, afterwards I say something to my self like, "Damn I should have just shit my pants!" but the scared reaction never happens.
Worst one I remember in the last year was following too close (mistake!) up in NH behind a minivan @ like 55mph and there was a 6-8" log in the road and the minivan ran it over and set it up at a 45 degree angle to my direction of travel, I thought I was done... not enough time to swerve since I was following too close and not alert enough. But I stood up on the pegs & went over it with no damage to me or the bike... pulled over expecting a blown shock or something but there was absolutely nothing wrong.
I gave myself a little adrenaline rush last month while going through a series of 2 corners WAY too fast for the street but there was no mistake & nothing went wrong, just got the rush and realized I was being dumb. But that seems rare now & I very rarely charge a corner or give in to the "red mist".![]()
I have always driven that way even in a cage, and every time I waiver from that practice, it seems like I have a close callOriginally posted by Paul_E_D
following to close has to be the most dangerous habit a motorcyclist can have. Since I started teaching MSF, I now always have a 3 second following distance and my close call incidence has dropped to ZERO.
Oh shit fo me these days would be a decreasing radius turn in the rain. Racing on rain tires has given me too much confidence in the wet. I realize I'm taking a chance way too late!
I would say the last close call I had whas while I was passing a 6wheel dumptruck on Rt 175 in Campton, I did not realize the truck was tailgaiting a car, at the same time I began to overtake the truck, the car made a left hand turn into a driveway

I had a 2x4 fall off a truck at 80mph last summer and did a helicopter manneuver right into my front fender, I tucked under the shield and said "oh shit, this is it". That sucked.

+1 wtf was that about?
Its dark heading south on 95
I wizz passed something dark in the adjoining lane.
A few seconds later another one but different I begin to slow and look with great attention.
Out of the gloom the entire highway is wall to wall oil black drums. I slolem through the first few as I am stopping
I pick my way through them when the 1st car impact behind sends one over the guard rail.
I take off as it appears leaving is the safest course.
Night riding still gives me heebie jeebies

I just thought about another one too. I mentioned it here before, last year sometime, about the Bolton Valley access road. Comin around a corner at about 60/65 or so and see mommy moose with her 2 babies standing in the middle of the road. That's some pucker factor. - I was able to stop about 10 feet from them. I was actually considering either trying to gun it around or dropping on my side and trying to slide under. SCARIEST moment of my life, well second.
lets see... here it is... Degsy wrote...

The most interesting part was crossing over the Bolton access road at about 8:45 pm. I know the road pretty well and had the kids with me so the pace was slow. All of a sudden I look down the road and this red machine comes at us at about 65/70. I tell the kids to stay still so it doesn't hit us but it started to slow down, but not fast enough. It got on the rear brakes and locked it up. Then another one comes around the turn to see us all over the place. It finally come to a stop (and I shit you not - the kids will atest to this) 7-10 FEET from me and the kids. If I had to shit it woulda come out. This big ugly bald motherfucker steps off the machine and looks at me and I look at it - it takes a few steps away from me ...I did the same. I thought the bastard was gonna come at me. We hopped the fence and were gone into the darkness. I was still shaking when I got to the top. I thought for sure that it was either gonna hit us or the ugly dude was gonna charge if wei hung around. I contemplated (for just a sec) to charge it as it approached because I didn't think that it was gonna stop in time. Decided that wasn't a good idea. It was BY FAR the scariest experience on the trail so far.....

back in 2001 I had a Katana 750.
I'm following an 18-wheeler and traffic is moving along at a good clip.
It was trashday on this main road so at the end of the all the driveways were empty trashbarrels.
Now I try to leave a decent buffer for following distance all the time and this time was no exception. Here is what happened:
Truck goes by a driveway, the low pressure right behind said truck sucks one of those big rubbermade trashbarrels out into the road directly infron of me. You know... one of those big ones with the handles and wheels on them?
Now their was a delay from when the truck went by and when the low pressure pulled the barrel out into the road in front of me. So it didn't come out into the road immediately. So some of the buffer I had was used up by the delay.
Surprisingly in this case, If I was following closer I would have gone by the barrel before it jumped out into the road.
I had 3 choices, go right, go left, stay straight and brake. I figured if I chose to turn, I would choose wrong and hit the darn thing that is rolling back and forth down the road following after the truck. At this point is was thinking "You've GOT to be KIDDING me!!"
I kept the bike straight up and braked. I ended up hitting the barrel anyway on the side and sent it flying off the road.
Thankfully I hit it on the side and didn't ride straight inot the open end of it. It would have swallowed the whole front end of the bike and this story wouldn't have a happy ending.
wow, that story was longer than I intended it to be.

My "Oh Shit" moment was a number of years ago.
Coming around a sharp corner on a back road in Maine. Just as I rounded the corner, I saw a friggen tractor stopped in the middle of the road!!! Nowhere to go but into the field. Unfortunately, an apple tree jumped in front of me, causing a rather abrupt stop.
13 days later I woke up in the hospital, and learned that my bike was totaled!!! Oh yea, that and that I had been comatosed for almost two weeks...
Thank you Shoei!!
Thinking back now there have been many. But one stands out in the WTF category.
We were heading to the Adirondacks on a Friday night. Of course we hadn't reserved a room so we were heading down main street Lake George at 1:00 AM looking. We were going about 35 to 40 mph when this guy runs from the sidewalk at full speed crossing the road in front of us. What was bizarre was that he was being chased by a cop on foot. This cop runs directly in front of me so I had to lock it up! He did the Kentucky three step avoiding me and I barely saved it! My friends and I had to stop on the side of the road for a moment to discuss if that really happened! WTF!
That picture of 108 in VT. brings back memories too. I was at Johnson State College up there in 88 and used to ride my 84 KZ 700 on 108 a lot. Well I'm railing this downhill corner on the Mansfield side when a car coming the other way is taking up the lane. I stood it up and then had to try making the corner. I lost the front and lowsided. As I was doing the Superman on the pavement I watched as the bike flew off the edge of the road and down about 20 yards. A bicycle guy stopped and helped me drag the thing up the incline. That took about 45 minutes!
There are more. I think I should write a book! Deer (ouch) Lawn chairs, raccoons, phone poles, it goes on!
