Relax... Many people read these threads who don't know anything about proper engine maintenance. In this thread, synthetics were dismissed as a waste of money with no justification. I simply presented the benefits of them because people need to see both sides and decide on their own.

    Oil and filters?

I'm gonna revert to the original question here, and I don't care to argue either way...

I've used semi-synth in every bike I've owned, other than the TL-R. I use dino in the TL-R 'cuz it's got a 'back tourque limiter (generic slipper-type clutch), and I've HEARD the synth wreaks havoc on it...

I've got about 100,000 miles total on my various streetbikes. I've always used Fram filters. Never had a problem with 'em...

I don't take one course or the other simply to save a few bucks. I chose what I chose because *I'm* comfy with it and the formula has worked for many years and many miles...

    Oil and filters?

Oh yeah!?!??! Well screw all of youse guys, I bought a brand new ZX-12 this year and it blew up with 5 miles on it cause I used a Fram filter and Sunoco oil. But my 1957 Harley FXRWSTUPIDFUCKINTHIING has 180,000 miles and I never changed the oil once, cause Harley filters and oil rock.

So you're all stupid and I know everything about oil and you're dumb so there.

    Oil and filters?

    Mystery 97 ysf1000r oil consumption.

Started after only a few hundred miles.

Got to about a qt every 250 but always a mystery as it could be fine then 20 minutes later the light comes on. My exhaust is dirty and there is smoke when I get on it.

At 16000 MPG pulled the motor did rings and valve seals. Only problem was appeared that #3 had top 2 rings with ring gaps lines up. Problem did not clear up but power was up.

Then I got my wheelie and high revs theory but little or no correlation. The biggest surprise was a drone home from Montpelier following a bald tire absolutely no more than 1/4 throttle the whole way and the f'n light came on in 87 miles.

This winter I am delving into pcv land and will probably just run a line out the swing arm. There is oil wetness in the air box Thought of a new bike but oil consumption still cheaper

    with no justification?

I think it's very easy to read the owners manual (proper source of mainenance info for a particular model, not an internet thread)

use what is called for. follow the schedule, that is all you need to do... changing more often or using a better grade of oil has what benefit? other than a placebo effect.

I can only use my SV as an example I have never put as many miles on any other bike I have owned, it runs as good or better than new, and starts the same @ -15° as it does @ 90° all on dino oil. claims that synthetic will make your engine last longer or start better are unproven, I fully expect,my SV will be running as good @ 200k as it does now,

just what is the benefit of synthetic? if you are going to follow the maintenance schedule recommended by the mfg

    Oil and filters?

A lot of bikes have a recommended synthetic blend.. mine does in the owners manual...

Of course they give you a recommended dino oil blend too.

Randy, don' t you know your high mileage bike doesn't count for anything cause it doesn't have MAD KAWI POWER?

There are way too many variables to argue this successfully. Randy's SV has 100k on it; mine lasted exactly 998 miles before it threw a connecting rod.

Sweet can we market this to aging baby boomers with fertility problems? As long as we sell it for less than $100,000 it will be cheaper than In-Vitro right?

    here it is...

clog and implode, dumping debris and dirt into your lubrication
system. It also will make every part of your bike permanently
slippery because of its linear molecular chain dispersion action.
Then it will leak onto your kickstand causing it to retract
automatically, dropping your bike on the ground! But that's not all...

Synthetic oil will round off your gears and spin your bearings. It
will also splatter onto your seat causing your girlfriend to fall off
in the apex of a turn and she'll never ride with you again. Synthetic
oil coats your sight window and your timing window with a whitish
pro-emulsification additive that is both non-removable and highly
corrosive. Synthetic oil will completely leak onto the ground overnight
and your dog will drink it and die.

Synthetic oil will wear out your tires and make your battery leak. It
will give you the desperate need to urinate after you put your full
leathers on and then jam your zippers shut. It will contaminate your
gasoline causing your bike to stall on railroad tracks and accelerate
uncontrollably near police cars. It will make it rain during rallies
and on weekends. It will lubricate your timing belts causing them to
jump teeth and break your valves to bits. Synthetic oil chemically
weakens desmodromic valves and causes the clearances to change every
six miles. Then it melts the black soles of your riding boots right
before you walk across your new carpeting.

While riding past groups of attractive women it will cause both of
your handlebar grips to slip off at the same time so you smash your
windscreen with the bridge of your nose. It also causes your swingarm
to crack, your studs to break, and your rotors to warp, and then it
voids your warranty by changing your odometer reading to 55,555. It
also dries out your wetclutch and wets your dryclutch. It makes your
clutch slave cylinder seal fail in the heaviest traffic on the hottest
day of the year while putting an angry wasp in your helmet for good
    measure.

Synthetic oil hides your 13mm socket and puts superglue on your
earplugs. Synthetic oil will scratch your faceshield and make your
gloves shrink two sizes night before trackday. Synthetic oil stole
your neutral and sold it to the Chinese for $1.25. Synthetic oil
will make you grow a tail. Synthetic oil will write long crazy
e-mails to your Internet friends and then sign your name at the
    bottom!

    Oil and filters?

RichW - doesn't your ThunderAce have an oil light, and not an actual pressure light? If oil is not cover the sensor, the light comes on.

Both my 87+88 FZR1000's and my 90 FZR1000 had this set-up. Same as all up to mid-90's Genesis engines.

It's a shitty set-up, compounded by the fact that those motors have a shallow sump and don't take a lot of oil to begin with.

    Oil and filters?

The Thunderace has a oil level light. I had the same bike and put 20k miles on it in 1 year. It burned 1 quart every 1k miles from the day i got it till the day i sold it.
I always used to fill the oil level to the top line in the window, if it was below that, the light would come on

    Oil and filters?

My old Superhawk motor used a qt every 200 miles. I think when I was at Deals I used a case of oil this past year.

RIP old motor I'll miss you.

Can we please have a moment of silence for the old motor.

    Oil and filters?

yzf1000 yes oil level light not pressure.

OIl does go somewhere it isn't light trapped in the head or something.

My actual thoughts is that at specific times it pukes out ounces rather than a slow constant dribble.

After reading this thread we need a new slogan

    In the past
Whiskey's for drinkin water is for fighting over.

    Now
Whiskey's for drinkin syhtnetics are for fighting over.

I had occasion to pull a Toyota motor with 140K on it that allways had Mobil 1 and could still see grind marks on the cam shafts and hone marks on the cylinder walls...sold me
