    Re: Ok honest question

cash ? like in a roll of $100 bills, no, I don't like carrying that much cash on me, I've generally written a check, I got a loan on my V-strom, even though I had the funds, interest rate was low, like 1% for 2 years, I put about half down, my SV I bought over phone with a CC, then next day swapped CC slip for check when I picked it up. I did pay cash my my 920r's but they were cheap money, one $500, the other $400

    I haven't financed a bike since 1976. I paid cash for all 4 of my current bikes. They are a 05 Hayabusa 7/05 a 01 Victory a leftover 7/03 a 06 Goldwing 7/06 and my 08 B King 7/09
I learned the hard way in the late 80 early 90s If I cant pay cash for it I don't need it.

Just for the record: I consider all highly liquid investments with an original maturity of three months or less at date of purchase to be cash equivalents.

I seen one response along these lines so far, those who voted "FUCK OFF" or "I WHEELIED IT TO DEATH" need not respond, you already win....

in other words, who has bought a motorcycle to alleviate public transportation costs, or sold a car to get a bike and use public transportation as the alternative to riding?

more specifically who has JUST a bike to commute?
15k miles on my bike in probably 12 actual riding months. I own my truck outright so i am financing a fair weather commuting vehicle that gets triple the gas mileage. Truck works better in the sleet/snow/subzero.

Me. It is and has been my primary transportation, year round. ONCE it snows only cold dry days, but look at my ride it shows the scars of winter.

think about the 5k+ someone just dropped on their bike then suddenly you have a house fire or other major event that is going to cost huge amounts of money. what if you choose to not insure your bike when its winter so you can save $$$ and because you paid cash, if something happens you are out the cost of the bike plus the cost to replace it, doesnt that then add up to more than the interest would be if you had taken out a loan?
The new bike policies cover the full year now without giving you a choice. Keeping a reserve for emergencies is always a good idea and good home insurance is a must along with health insurance if you don't want to loose it when ill. I will tell you that the monie's I have saved by not paying/or reducing interest over the past 30 years must add up to between $60,000 and $100,000 dollars. Current stupidly low rates excluded but they get you with up front closing costs. I am financed at 2.5% no closing cost now but it will suck if the rates change for me with a variable loan. The cost of mortgage finance can be as much as your purchase price over the life of a 30 year loan. How many home improvements and bikes could you buy with that? A short term loan is not as bad unless they get you with high closing costs or some other gimmick! Like you miss one payment and they stick it to you like the 1 year no interest plans! So be carefull.

    Re: Ok honest question

I am not trying to justify anything. It was a simple question that apparently many have firm views in...

I dont care how you pay for a bike or how you handle your own finances, i just wanted to see the numbers. now what it has turned into is something entirely different, and i may be to blame by not specifying exactly what i was asking, oh well....

in fact i am surprised no one has pointed out the obvious answers in "FUCK OFF" and "I WHEELIED IT TO DEATH"

My bike is my primary transportation. Thankfully Mayor Menino is lenient on letting us park on the sidewalks in certain areas for free. I also have a 2001 Jeep that often goes weeks without being started, and gets driven maybe 3k/year.

I can drive in and walk 15 minutes each way for about $25/day.

I can take the commuter rail for $9.50 + $2 for parking each day.

Or I can ride in for the price of gas, about $1.50/day.

The bike is one of the most practical things I've ever owned. When I had a scooter I rode all year, as long as the plows had an hour or so to take care of the major roads. I almost want another now that winter's coming.

I put 25,000+ miles per year on my V-strom and less than 4000 miles per year on my Jeep, which would you consider primary ?

fwiw, I don't commute , my office is on my property, the majority of my miles are business related
