Since this is your first bike and you will have a new MC license, insuring the R6 is gonna be expensive, just FYI. Also, don't forget gear

the thing is..resale on the 250-500's is not great...so you will probably sit on it for awhile if that is your plan..everything slaps said is true and a valid point but if you have your head on right and treat the bike with respect you will be ok...you can kill yourself on a ex250 if you are not careful....if you do not keep the r6 i would look into a ex500 and ride it for atleast a season will you take the MSF ERC and a trackday....then upgrade...

First, there must be something wrong with the 748 for it to be only $4,000.
Second, don't forget about researching maintenance costs for the R6 and the 748. I don't know about the R6, but as I stated in the last thread, the 748 will require a bit of maintenance every 6,000 miles and it can add up quickly.

Don't buy the Ducati just because its a Ducati.

have you done any research on insurance on any of these bikes? I use Progressive currently and, for some reason, any Ducati is cheaper to insure than any other Japanese bike for me (about 1/3 as much as it would cost me to insure any Japanese bike). However, I've heard of a few insurance companies that are the exact opposite.

Just make sure you look at this from all angles: Cost of maint, cost of insurance, comfort on the bike (ergonomics), comfort with controlling the bike (riding confidence), etc

When you say "Fix" do you mean he will replace the fairing? Which fairing is it? I assume he dropped the bike? There's probably more damage than just the fairing if that is the case

Trust me when I tell you that it is incredibly expensive to repair a Ducati. I wrecked my 996S two years ago and the insurance company totalled it because they estimated that it would cost $15,000 to repair. For what its worth, my dealer gave me a quote of $18,000 to fix it. Also keep in mind that the engine was still in good running condition. I rode it home 80 miles from the crash without a problem.

I just read the title to this thread and had a flashback to the movie "Valley Girl" from the 80's.

From memory (since the 996 uses many of the same parts as the 748) I believe the rear subframe (the frame that holds the seat, passenger pegs if its a biposto, and tail plastic) was somewhere around $1,000 if the drop was hard enough and the rear fairing was around $1,500.
Seeing as it was a drop, I'd be surprised to hear that there is no other damage on the bike, unless it was a driveway tip-over

Keep the R6, it's a great first bike that could possibly last you some years. 250's & 500's ARE NOT good first bikes for many people out there. In fact, they're HORRIBLE first bikes. I've stated my arguements for this many times over...

Here's what I vote: Shut the fuck up all ready about all this '...boo-fuckin'-hoo-which-bike-should-I-get-now-I've-got-one-and-I-don't-know-what-to-do...' pissing & moaning you've been doing since you first logged in. Keep the fuckin' R6, learn how to RESPONSIBLY ride it, take the cash you were GONNA spend on a bike and get top-notch gear...

And kill the myspace message/abbreviating shit. It's as old as your 'which bike should I get' posts...
