    Re: Opinions on V-Stroms

So how is the market for used DL650's these days? I'm peeling off some of the farkles to sell my 09 w/ABS. Most of the "stuff" will stay - centerstand, hand guards, heated grips, Akrapovic exhaust and probably the engine guards will stay on it. The Jesse bags and ELKA shock will come off and the stock shock will go back on. Just turned 20,000 miles. NADA gives "Low Retail" of $4,913 and "High Retail" of $6,467. Non-ABS is $4,475/$5,885 so the $500 for ABS seems to have been a good choice.

I think it is reasonable to ask for it $5000. It is closing on the end of the season in the Northeast (though most DL650 riders ride most of the year I would guess).

Riding the Tiger more? Or just not riding as much across the board?

I think you should post up some numbers for the goodies. I think you might be surprised. Randy and I aren't the only two cheapskates riding these things anymore.

I think the R/R on mine is done. Voltage monitor has always shown under 12.5V at idle, but you blip the throttle and it goes green (>13V). Now it flashes red (<12V) at idle and often doesn't go green again until above 5k RPM!

Reading up.. but I think it's forked.

Swap the battery out of the SV to try just to make sure it isn't bringing you down.

Wow prices all over the map on CL. There is an 09 ABS in W MA with some farkles and 20,000 miles. he's asking $6,500.

Think I'll just put it on eBay and let what happens happen.

Either a dreamer, or one of your "my wife made me list it" types. But no farklin' way is that a fair price.

I thought you were done with fleabay after selling the HD that way?

You think? Battery is what, 3 years old? Been kept on a tender in my warm-ish basement every winter. Can't believe it'd be toast.

Reading last night suggested that low voltage => stator. R/R would => high voltage, which I don't have.
Tried to get into it to test the stator last night and I can't find the plug for it to save my life. Too much crap packed in there.

    Sold my first one there.

But so many bikes get listed every day that you onto the back pages quickly and because their search engine sucks, people can't search for local bikes. Everybody in North America is on one big list.

Easiest thing to troubleshoot, so naturally I'd start there.

I've had batteries go in 3 years. Don't count it out until you count it out by testing.

If I could find the damned plug, it sounds like testing the stator involves measuring the coil impedance.
I'd still like to do that test. If it checks out I would definitely swap batteries though. I think the SV battery is slightly wrong for the 'strom. But I am sure it is close enough.

    Stator to ground open ciecuit
stator wires to each other a couple of ohms but consistent
some 650 have moving magnets so pop the left cover and check magnets and brown on the statur

Get Shindengen, r/r series one if your keeping the bike

    Re: Opinions on V-Stroms

Stator resistance checks out. 0.2 Ohms across all three terminals.
The manual has a no-load voltage test. But I can't figure out how the hell I'd be able to do that without pulling this thing apart twice. I had to pull the fairing, tank, and airbox to get to the connectors. They are buried right down in there.

Put the battery on the tender. It is supposedly charging, was below the 80% part where it goes to trickle. Swapping batteries might be a good idea.

Stator is shot. One coil measures 2-3 VAC @ 5k RPM. The rest read over 60, in spec.
Pulled the cover, yep, signs of it burning out.

Stator is back ordered from most sources. All I haven't tried yet is the dealer... which is significantly more expensive.

There is a used one on fleabay.
Also on fleabay are aftermarket Electrosport stators. These have a bad rep, but supposedly they got bought by someone and it's all better now.

Rickystator. Get a higher output one that can handle the farkle load.

Looks like they do not have anything for the 'strom.

Thanks for this. I just dropped my generator off with them. They will rebuild.
I am motorcycle-less in the meantime. But they should have it back to me in plenty of time for NC.

For what? There are no magnets that I can see. The rotor assembly is intact and sure looks undamaged. The stator was not deformed, only slightly charred. I think I caught this before the whole thing failed.

I should go MOSFET though. Hell, everyone with a V-Strom should, I think.

the "higher output" stators are the ones with a bad rap, only way to make more electricity without going to exotic materials is more windings = thinner wire or thinner insulation = burn out quicker

There is also talk of them making less power at idle/low RPMs. Not that I spend much time at low RPMs these days.
In fact I think my failure is related to me reving the piss out of it trying to keep up with those sport bike clad jokers.

Have to say, my DL650 is a lot sportier after removing bags, rack, engine guards etc. Probably 40-50 lbs as I carried tools, spares, etc etc.
