Note we now need a real SERIES R/R which should prevent stator cooking

Awesome, hopefully that will propel someone towards my 09 ABS so I can get a 250 dirt bike!

I understand. I always loved my dirt bikes more than I loved my street bikes. I cannot really explain it... except that dirt riding is maybe like a free track day that you can have whenever you want, as often as you want, if you live in the right place.

I am now very seriously thinking of installing one of these. I installed the new re-wound coil from Rick's Motorsports this morning. While picking it up I asked about regulators. They do not offer a kit for the 'strom, but they are entirely aware of the suckyness of the stock R/R and recommend upgrading. I gathered that they push MOSFET. But he admitted that the series design is possibly better for some bikes like the 'strom. It seems to me that the rating goes:

    stock/shunt <<< MOSFET < series

Meaning MOSFET is good 'nuf for most applications and users. Although I read reports of folks burning out stators even with MOSFETs installed.

Definitely the achilles heel of the V-Strom.

My bike is 70% back together. It now starts. Off, the system reads 12.8VDC at the battery. Switch the ignition on and that drops, stabilizing at 12.2VDC once the fuel pump primes. Thumb the starter and it almost immediately jumps to 13.9VDC and stays there clear up past 6k RPM. I'm calling that cured ... for now.

Bike was a bitch to start after sitting for a couple weeks now. So alarming considering the bike is normally press button, select gear, go!

Interesting side note: I've been reading some threads on SVRider, now that I own an SV as well. Seems like the 1st gen SVs are infamous for burning out R/Rs. Stator coils are not nearly as widely reported. Are they running a lower capacity stator as that model is likely designed for lower power requirements.

Oh, and Stromper. My magnets look fine to my eye.

I guess 650 have potted/magnet with a ring the 1000 has loose magents just glued to the inside of the stator so they can move

Wow! I should have gone +1 on the front cog 15k miles ago. One half commute to work and I am already in love. The only thing lacking is roll-on in traffic at ~70+ indicated. I have to downshift. Woe is me. THIS is how the V-Strom should have been delivered for my use.

With stock gearing the speedo and tach would visually line up in 5th. In 6th the tach would be lower, visually, than the speedo. Now they line up in 4th and the tach is lower in both 5th and 6th. I foresee myself riding around in 5th for no good reason now and then for a while.

I also have brand new Pilot Roads on both ends and a shiny new chain. Bike is smooth, quiet, and seems to run like a top.

Here is to 27k more happy miles.

Cold as balls this AM though.

My 16t front and new chain/stock rear is going on tonight.

I held off on new PR3's until the spring, I have a lot of miles left on the Metzlers on there now.

    Re: Opinions on V-Stroms

Yeah, that old chain was toast. Even with a Scottoiler, it was too dry for it's previous life and I couldn't bring it back.

New chain is quiet and smooth. Also snugged up the steering head bearings, those things were way loose as it turns out. The 16t front sprocket seems nice so far, but I find myself going 5 over what I normally did on my commute to work. Gotta watch it!

I may be keeping my V-Strom a while longer. Guy is advertising an 09 ABS with 13K for $4,200, with farkles. At a certain point, I'll just keep it.

Yes, the Vstrom is abundant and is probably worth more than the market price in terms of overall refinement, enjoyment and utility. That is an excellent deal - I agree
