Re: Options for a 20 mile fun commuter

I recently picked up a used WR250R for my 3.5 mile commute. I was able to find one with sumo and dirt wheels. It's been a blast.

BMW 310R, I think I know someone who has one and wants to sell. It's a 2018 with less than 700miles

Re: Options for a 20 mile fun commuter

<= Owned a KLX400SR (rebranded DRZ400S) for a few years. Loved it. Arguably should have held onto it. Mine was a 'S' model dual-sport; factory 21/18 wheels, lights, mirrors, speedo, CV carb, yadda yadda. I bought DRZ400-SM wheels and had mine setup to go SM<=>dual-sport in about 20 minutes.

It's be a riot for a ~20 mile commute. Mine is a ~45 mile run 1-way, mostly interstate. It was a little tough for that ride. It would do 80+ depending on gearing. But I didn't like it. Honestly I didn't like cruising on that bike at anything above ~50 in dual-sport mode. Faster speeds were easier on the sumo wheel-set.

I remember taking a group ride with a cat on a WR250X. Group was somewhat.. aggressive?! with passing. I was on my V-Strom. Not exactly a rocket. I had to down-shift a lot and work to make the passes the group was going for. WR man just waived everyone past and fell back. No way he could safely pass on those higher speed state highways.

I rode a CRF250L back to back with my DRZ400. The CRF was heavier and slower at the same time.

At $3k you should be able to buy two DRZ400's assuming you are willing to do the usual tires, battery and carb clean.

Just found this thread, guy owns a CRF250L and then eventually upgrades to a WR250R.

I agree with the ADV thread. The CRF250L can unleash a good amount of power with relatively simple mods <$700. See this DUAL SPORT REPORT: HONDA CRF250L HOT ROD MODS | Dirt Bike Magazine
Mine has the exhaust/header/ecu which improves power significantly and reduces weight some. The only bike I can compare it to is my old crf230l. Compared to that bike my CRF250L has close to double the HP and it is noticeable. I can get to 70mph quickly. From 70 to 80 it is slower. I feel like cruising at 70 mph is fairly easy, but reserve is limited. In the dirt, the WR is probably on a different level with much better suspenders. The crf was never meant to be a great dirt bike, but its decent, reliable, easy. I saw a dyno chart somewhere and I think under 6k rpm the crf makes as much if not more than the WR. The WR takes off at higher rpms.

You're either a glutton for punishment or have a much more cushioned ass than me. Last time I took mine for an hour ride at 55, my asshole was on fire after 20 minutes. That seat vibrates like a paint shaker.

don't they only go about 55mph?...and everyone else drives 80mph...so i'd want a bike that could at least top out at 90mph just for the extra GTFO

WR250X and or WR250R. Can be found for the cheap on CL and are bulletproof with 26k valve check intervals.

Okay, I admit it. At this exact moment NE CL inventory is low. But in the past ~15-30 days there were 2-3 with low mileage, varying age, for 3000-3500; they don't last long on CL. There was one that was sub 3k but the ad read real sketchy. Compare those prices to DRZ where it's a struggle to find any under 4K no matter the age or how beat they may be.

I bought a 2016 WR250R for $4k here in Californee and thought it was a screaming deal. It came with the original wheels and tires but the PO bought and installed Warp 9 supermoto wheels/rotors with street tires. Thing is a blast and I'm going to try to take it in the dirt this weekend.

Well that one looks like a 4k bike. Looks super nice and well equipped. I picked up an '08 with 1900 miles last spring for 3k; completely stock.
