When I got my very first bike in 2003, I got hooked up with NESR. I met great people and learned a philosophy on motorcycle riding. Even though I now ride a harley sportster, I still kept the same philosophy I learned here, unlike everyone else I know who rides a harley. It saved me last night.
I dress to crash!
After a nice fall afternoon ride I was heading home. I was on a stretch of road that is notorious for deer. I was already riding slow and saying in my head, please no deer. I rounded the top of a hill, started to descend, said to myself, wow the moon is really nice, the sky is a beautiful purple color.
WHAM!!!
A deer jumped out from the right side of the road right on to my lap. I remember the slam, and then being in the road. A woman was behind me and saw it all happen. I was able to get myself out of the road, get my helmet off and talk to a woman. I called my boyfriend at work to let him and know, and remember all of a sudden blue lights were there. I remember seeing the deer dead next to my mc.
The next thing I recall is being in an ambulance. I kind of came too and realized that I was doing the concussion thing and asking questions over and over again.
All and all, I have a slightly separated right shoulder, bruised right pelvis and hip, bruised right calf, sprained left thumb, mild concussion. I made out well considering. My helmet is all scuffed up on the right side and back. Lucky I was wearing all my gear. I had leather chaps on over my jeans, no road rash at all. My left glove is scuffed but it didn't even burn through the leather. I was wearing my sport bike coat, not my leather one, so I think the hard pads in it helped me out as well.
I am amazed and thankful. No operator error because there is nothing I could have done to prevent what happened, other than not being on my bike. The deer came out of nowhere, and literally was in my lap!!
Now to be sore for the next few days and to see the condition of my bike. At least I had a good end of the season ride up until that point.
Be safe every one! Watch for deer!!!
