    Outta riding shape...

I'm guessing I'm not the only one who's been downing advil after their first ride weekend... 2 days and 420 miles would be nothing for midseason, but holy crap am I sore after being off the bike for 5 months.

Wondering if there are any bike specific strengthening excercises I could add to riding to get back in 800 miles-per-weekend shape. Or maybe for next winter when I'm off the bike to make the transition to riding a little easier...

They have books like "Pilates for horseback riders" maybe there's a similiar thing for motorcyclists?
Like... "Step aerobics for track"... "Jazzercise for lean angle" or "Yoga for Yammy riders"

Wall sits to increase leg stamina.

And eat twinkies. They don't help, but boy are they tasty.

    Borrow someone else's wall.

Back when I used to take the T regularly, I would walk over to a bench and do wall sits right next to it. People would look at me funny

Planet fitness has gym memberships for $10/month if you don't have one .

Rowing machines are amazing for upper body endurance.

Running, which is HIGHLY underrated and is very effective for lower body endurance.

Combine the two and you're all set

Also, bodybuilding.com has a vast amount of fitness knowledge for free.

    p90x.

Or running... basketball or soccer would work as well.

Then do some pushups and situps and you'll be good to go

I think people look at you funny regardless of what you're doing...

I did get an elliptical machine which I've been using all winter, plus sit ups and strength training for upper body. Was just wondering about riding specific exercises.... Even with the routine I've been doing all winter my triceps are killing me... legs aren't too bad... mostly back and upper body.

    Re: Outta riding shape...

Ride. To get in shape to ride, you ride, Femmes. I separated my left shoulder, and tore a rotator in my right this winter, was stiff, couldn't raise my arms over my head for three months. Rode the bike 850 miles round trip up to Champlain, up to Burlington/Colchester, hit some side twisties on the C-14, by the time I got back a few days later, I was tip-top. A good idea to work out, but to get in shape to ride, ya gotta ride. It's hangin' on in the wind, pushing the bike through twisties, the braking, the acceleration, the hangin' off, hangin' on and hangin' in. It's pretty unique physical activity, especially with a heavy bike or one ya have to flick around and "manhandle" down the road.

Besides, it's fun! What's better than a bike once ya get past gettin' laid right and proper? Nuttin!

    Bingo

eta: Bergs was telling me leg lifts really help as well, sit in a chair with a small weight on your feet or something like that.

Just typical street riding gets you THAT sore? I'm as outta shape as they get, but the only riding that reminds me just HOW outta shape I am is dirty riding...

You got it right! I recouped in the gym first before riding after my shoulder injury and it helped.

No running for me... acl and meniscus repair+severe asthma=no running. But I do like the elliptical though, low impact. Yes...first rides of the season, 2 days in a row, after being off the bike for 5 months was a bit pain inducing. And I know Greg was sore too...

    Re: Outta riding shape...

Like most sports, the sport itself is usually the best training. However, I have found that cycling transfers fitness really well to motorcycling. Not only does it give you excellent leg strength, it really helps with lower back and other core muscles -- especially road cycling, which has a much more aggressive body position.
