I think powder coating is the way to go on anything metal since it's a much more durable finish.

Powdercoating will last MUCH longer than paint, although it will be more expensive.

I'm getting mine done right now for right around $200.

Powdercoat. I'm a big fan of painting small pieces, but wheels need a more durable finish IMHO.

Powdercoat.... The wheels on my Tuono were actually PAINTED by the FACTORY and the last time I had my tires changed (properly, by a scratchless tire changer) they still chipped

That reminds me, I gotta pull em off & powdercoat em at some point.

    I believe Ray-Ray.

One thing to remember about powder-coating wheels(or frame/swingarm) you will need to replace the bearings.

One more thing to keep in mind. Don't know what type of wheels you are doing. But if you are doing pc on magnesium wheels, make sure your guy knows what he's doing. Mags tend to "gas out" during the process if not prepped properly. And you won't be happy.

Since you mentioned it, can you reuse wheel bearings? I had mine pulled out, but the guy said he could put them back in for me when the wheels are coated. Is that a bad idea?

Buy new, removing them puts strain on the race. They are cheap enough so don't risk it!

Someone above mentioned getting theirs done for $200. Is that a pretty typical price and do you have to bring the wheels to them prepped to go, or will they blast and prep them. I'd love to black out the wheels on this moped.

That was me, and I stripped them myself. Dunno if it would have been the same if I hadn't or not, though.

That is what they do to dirt wheels. It will save you some weight too.

I've heard anodizing is not as durable as powdercoat.

    Re: Paint or Powdercoat wheels?

Keep in mind there are two types of anodizing.
    Clear and Hard Coat.
They are quite different, do your homework for your specific needs.

I personally love clear anodized parts, but I think you may only be able to do matt black on a previously coated product.
In other words clear anodizing colors need to be done on virgin aluminum.
Anodizing differs greatly depending who does it and I think Powder coating would be more durable overall.

    Re: Paint or Powdercoat wheels?

I was doing the repaint route. Started the stripping process, got carried away and removed all the paint. Then started with water and #200, then #400, then #1000, then #1500, and then finished up with #2000 grit wet and dry sandpaper. Then when I touched them with polish they look like chrome. Very light on wallet and even lighter wheels. It took about two afternoons. The key is doing a good job is with the #200 stage. The downside is they require maintenance (polishing) to stay good looking.

I'm interested in getting the 998 wheels powdercoated. Does anyone have a vendor they'd recommend? Metro-West would be ideal, but willing to travel...

If you're actually in Hanover NH and don't mind traveling a bit, I can recommend K&G Performance Solutions in Fitzwilliam NH. I had the crash bars on my Super Adventure coated there and they did a fantastic job color matching. They're also great guys to deal with, real down to earth and love doing what they do.

I'm spending most of my time in Waltham MA these days.. but Fitzwilliam is only about 1h20m from here. So going up there would not be the end of the world
