How old do you think is too old? Mileage?

I was originally looking at a used 2012 Yamaha FZ6R with 1,700mi on it, but I'd ****ing cry if so much as a scratch happened to it lol.

Thoughts are appreciated, gents and ladies.

What kind of bike do you want to have? Yamaha bikes are $6K. Good bikes costs often range from $4K to $7k. If you are looking for a cheap bike, then second hand bikes will do.

If that's the case, then a half 'busa won't do.

Given that I'm more than likely to drop it, I'm looking for something under the 2500 mark. I'd like something sporty, but also something that will let me learn how to ride and handle a motorcycle properly.

If anyone feels like taking a look at what's available in my area, I'm looking around the Hartford Craigslist.

As Sav recommended, a Katana... http://hartford.craigslist.org/mcy/3556970282.html

Body says 1700, title says 1600, 1500 on the windshield. He'd probably take less than 1400 for it. If you're at all mechanical it might be a deal.

Dont worry about the "details"... you can always just chill outside a trendy coffee shop/store/restaurant and look cool standing next to the bike...

Its all I was ever good at. It got me laid.

You don't even need an actual bike for that. Just a jacket with huge logos and carry around a helmet. Same results

Duh that's why you chill next to a bike with a solo cowl, that's just rookie 101 stuff.

A girl living in the same building as me would ask for a ride every time she saw me geared up (pretty much every day), to the point she would be sitting outside expecting me.

    She was pretty heavy.

    I installed a solo cowl.

I think it looks better anyways and is quickly removed when an attractive girl wants a ride.

Good gear but don't be afraid to add some color. Black is hot in the summer and doesn't stand out all that well in traffic. Plus the Marines say you are supposed to have a bright colored upper outer garment, don't they?

I'd go for the SV, plenty of people know them and know what can be done to them. Plus you could make it into a race bike later on.

BUT That low mile Can o Tuna isn't bad either.

ill give you a little history on my riding career. started in 98.
started on a 97 CBR F3-- no msf, no experience. had it for less than a year. let a buddy ride it and he crashed it 20ft later. that reminds me...dont let people ride your bike. got it fixed and eventually i totaled it all by myself due to inexperience
next was a 93 GSXR 600. rode it for a year or so. totaled it when i grabbed a handful of front brake (after i had just replaced the pads) due to a car with no brake lights stopping in front of me. endo'd it. totaled
next was a 93 CBR F2. this one i managed to have for a very very long time. as a matter of fact i only sold it about 4 years ago.
in 01 i bought a brandy new SV650S. i rode it on the street for 4 years or so before it was relegated to track only. when i did that i actually bought a 2nd SV650S...this time an 02. still have both
around 06 i bought a brandy new 03 SV1000S, yes...brand new leftover. had that until last season when i sold it and bought another bike
07 KTM Supermoto. this thing is about the most fun you can have with your pants on....

theres something about riding a low HP bike. when you ride on a familiar road on a 600+ cc sportbike it never really feels like your tearing it up. youre in 2nd gear going 75mph around a corner and life is grand. on an SV (or the like) youre in 4th gear at the throttle stop just wringing its neck and doing 75 mph around the same corner....life is still grand...it just feels more like youre working for it instead of riding a bike thats feels like its napping while you putz about. when my 650 was a streetbike it was fun to not only keep up with guys on their brand new R6s but pass them too...with a passenger on the back
if youre concerned about keeping up, then dont be. at the race track the guys that race SVs are lapping within 4 seconds of their own times on a 600. its not what you ride but how you ride it.

Looks like all the air cooled Katanas and Suzi GSes and such are priced within a grand or so of a clean SV. For the extra grand, I'd go for an SV all day, any day.

Re: How much should I be paying for my first bike?

    I went ninja 500, yzf600r, gsxr750, zx10r+sv650 (track), now Tuono 1000r.

Loved the 500 (but wanted to "keep up" lol)
    Loved the 600r
    Loved the 750
Hated the zx10r (only good for scaring yourself)
The Tuono1000 is fun to ride once in a while, but it's kind of obnoxious. It just sits.

My favorite bike BY FAR was the SV650. You'll love it, and you'll never want to "upgrade" to a bigger bike.

Wow, thanks for the responses, everyone. I got my permit today, **** the DMV lol. I sent an e-mail to the guy offering up the SV650S (http://hartford.craigslist.org/mcy/3633861091.html), no response yet. I also found a '98 CBR600F3 (http://hartford.craigslist.org/mcy/3574351733.html), looks nice, 20k miles. I'm leaning towards the SV650.

def the SV. the fact that the F3 needed new piston rings sends up a red flag. especially at 20k. its a honda. all it should need is gas and the occasional oil change every decade

the SV appears to have a painted frame. a little curious why someone would do that since it would involve dropping the motor out.
