I think we should legalize and institute more effective deterrents for scumbags like this. Maybe we could cover them in race gas and burn them at the stake on a TV show, might work right after American Idol or something (that seems like the right demographic).

This actually happened locally a couple years ago (2002-3?) I remember reading about it on NEDB. Some guy strung an RG6 coax (cable tv) cable across the powerlines behind his house. A group rode up them in one direction and then back down them an hour later... no cable on the way up, booby trap on the way back.
Luckily the person who was unlucky enough to discover it wasn't hurt too bad, but it sounds like the guy out in CA is fucked for life.

Yep... had it happen to me just like that.

No cable in one direction... cable when I came back about 3 hours later.

Saw it at the last minute and was able to scrub off most of my speed and then slide.

It should definitely be called ATTEMPTED MURDER.

I have seen it done on snowmobile trails also. I once hit a log that was dragged across a trail I was going about 45mph It was an old rail bed and I hit the log . I got thrown off my snobobile and missd a telephone pole by inches. There were tire tracks where they dragged the log.

Not to mention they're full grown idiots. Not that it's any better, but I can see kids doing something like that because they don't think of the possible consequences and might think it's a joke or something. Those asshats are obviously out to hurt people.

Kids will be kids but even when we were 10 we knew it was a hell of a lot funnier to stand on the side of the road and PRETEND we were stretching a cord across the road then actually doing so... and that was when we were 10! Shortly thereafter we realized it was NOT funny.

Best defense against this is just to make sure you are riding legally and away from areas that piss people off... I have yet to see wires stretched across trails but I've heard of it and also heard people are putting spike strips and other nasty stuff in the trails to flatten tires. NOT fun to put your foot through a spike strip.

It's not even the dirt bike they have a problem with, these same types of folks don't even want you riding a bicycle through "their" woods.

didn't something like this occur on an old railroad bed in the southern NH vicinity like 10 years ago? I lived in Nashua and remember some of the neighbors talking about it.
