Re: Peter Kates' Axle Removal Seminar

????? What kind of damage was done to that axle that precipitated that?

I'm guessing a crash and a prolonged slide on the end of the axle?

I'm guessing a long breaker bar and a socket could have twisted that axle nut off but if Pete decided the sawzall was needed I'll buy it.

The axle nut fucking SEIZED. Even the axle block on the other side was stripping.

They threw everything they could at it. Red hot w/ a torch, breaker bar, you name it. Tricky Mike himself couldn't have gotten that thing off (*gasp!* blasphemy!).

I have to assume that this was the smartest thing to do, under the circumstances. At some point, you are best to just cut your losses, and get it over with. When you say that the axle block was stripping on the other side, this picture makes sense.

Re: Peter Kates' Axle Removal Seminar

Very rarely is brute force, including busting out hammers and saws, a good idea. In fact, every time I've had one in my hands, I'm trying to find reasons why its a dumb idea before I start hitting/cutting. Sounds like this was one of those times, glad to see it went well. Surprised torching it didn't do the trick.

His sawing technique needs work though. Safety glasses covering his forehead, and his arm doesn't look positioned best to recover from when the blade bucks/binds. I think you guys need to explain ATGATT to him, he clearly is a noob

Was it just a corrosion thing or something as of yet undetermined and never to be determined that caused the axle and nut to seize? Impressive to say the least.

    A PKism:

"If you're doing something with a hammer, than you're doing something wrong."

What's the line for a sawzall?

Re: Peter Kates' Axle Removal Seminar

The axle block was stripping, as in the axle was actually warping/cutting into the block? You guys must have heated that axle nut up so much that it fused itself to the axle.

I know the owner of the bike and I don't recall him crashing, and the nut was definitely seized!
