I used a canon 40d with a 70-200mm. I'm going to look into a 2x extender so I can get in a bit tighter next time.

before you buy into the extenders make sure you check the quality you lose through the use of them. I am not an expert but the guy at the camera shop when I was looking into them suggested I not use them. He suggested that I just buy a larger zoom lens and retain the quality or get better quality depending on the glass in the lens.

The issue comes down to you moving the lens further away from the sensor and I guess can lead to quality loss in the photos.
