    Re: Pinned - Grom Love

Recently acquired a Grom with ProTaper bars and no mirrors. The bar end mirrors I picked up won't fit in the bar ends. The answer is almost certainly some kind of bar end adaptor, but online parts places are apparently too good for anachronisms like "measurements." Anyone know what should fit?

What sort of not fitting? Most bar end mirrors have an insert that goes into the end of that bar, then the mirror clams on to that. Pro Taper bars will likely either be 7/8" or 1 1/8".

at the end of the bar they're all the same OD. the ID of an aluminum bar like the protaper is smaller because the metal is thicker.
the bar end mirrors (amazon) that I got for mrs ripper's vino came with the two different size wedges.

I had a set of woodcraft bars on the SV that were too tight for the bar ends I had for it. For 10$ I had a machine shop open up the ends just a touch.

Smallest setting on bar end mirror insert thingy is too big to go into opening (ID) on the end of the Protaper bar. Too much taper I guess.

Looks like those plus some longer bolts might do it. Thanks.

    Re: Pinned - Grom Love

The good news is that I'm an idiot; there was an outer sleeve around the business end of the mirror insert that, once removed, allowed the mirrors to fit without issue. Yay!

The bad news is that after replacing all four turn signals, and testing that they all worked (plus blinking in the bullshit integrated tail thing), I brought the bike to be inspected today and...none of the four signals would blink (and neither would the integrated tail). No blinking on the dash, no blinking in the signals, in either direction. What should I test first?

    Re: Pinned - Grom Love

So here's a wrinkle: I think the signals I replaced (with incandescents) were LEDs. If the previous owner inlined resistors (somewhere) to make the LEDs work, maybe the resistors plus the incandescents are drawing too much load and burned out the relevant fuse?

That would be the opposite. Ohms law says that I = V/R. Meaning the higher the resistance, the less current you draw. Extra resistance in-line would reduce the voltage across the bulb, making it dimmer.

Thanks guys. Fuses are good; I think the incandescent signals just aren't working with a host of aftermarket wiring mods done to support LED headlight / signals / integrated tail. Ordered a bunch of OEM parts off motosport / ebay and hope to have it all de-fucked eventually.

took a quick gander at craigslist and it seems that you can buy a brand new 2018 grom for $3,100 or buy a 3-4 year old grom for $3,200-$4,500

any reason why? or is classic craigslist - all the good deals are bought quick.

also this dude is renting it for $50/day

now thaaat seems worth it to try it...without buying it (rather put the $$ into vstrom maintenance)

The system needs to adapt honestly.
You can’t get your license or certificate on Z125 and then go buy a busa.
It’s insane we don’t have tiered licensing still.

    Re: Pinned - Grom Love

Last I checked, you don't need to do MSF at all to get your license. At least not here in NH.
I've never done MSF or anything like it. Rode a 78 Honda CB400 around a parking lot for 10 minutes and they gave me a license to ride anything I wanted. My folks bought that CB specifically because a 400cc was the smallest bike you took the "big bike" course with wider u-turns, etc. Mom and dad both used this bike to pass the test, get their licenses and then go buy the bikes they really wanted. Dad wound up on a 80ci Harley tourer, mom on a GL1100 'Wing. It was a well accepted pattern. The day I did my exam a woman was there with her biker looking husband/boyfriend/whatever. She was also on some smaller UJM. After she passed her man audibly announced "nicely done, now let's go get you a real bike".

If you want Euro styled tiered licensing here you have a long way to go.

It's 2x as wild as I was 17 and had been riding under a "temporary" permit for months already. There were no size restrictions on that permit. Only that I could not leave the state, carry a passenger or ride after dark. Something like that.

Another guy that got tested the same day as me was an Air Force kid from the nearby base. He was there on a 900-ish cc sportbike. He failed.. and had to continue riding on that permit until he could come back to retake. Another guy volunteered that it was his 3rd time trying to pass the test. Legally rode to the DMV site for the test.. then home again after he failed.. again.

I think thats a terrible idea. Owner of Training Wheels asked me about it awhile back and I told him "absolutely not". Simple reason, 12" wheels to learn and then you go onto the 17"

You don't need the MSF for your license

Msf is required in CT and RI.

Did you know you can use a fully automatic scooter to go through the msf class? That'll really get your panties in a pretzel.

Personally for new riders I don't think the grom type bikes are a bad way to learn. Allows the basic techniques to be learned and practiced utilizing a tool that minimizes stress. I believe they have the power to potentially accelerate the learning process for persons who are smaller and would otherwise have difficulty with a 250. Kind of like a strider bike.

There's a separate license for that in CT. 3 wheeler license. You can't use a 3 wheeler for a standard motorcycle license.

3 wheeler license will let you operate a Spyder or sidecar type but won't let you operate a motorcycle. If you have a motorcycle license you can use a 3 wheeler or a motorcycle.

Glad to hear CT got it right. I see CanAm advertising that you can get your motorcycle license on them in Maine in other states and that's just stupid.
