    Police everywhere...

Went to the Berkshires yesterday. Passed soo many troopers on the twisty roads it made me uncomfortable (Rt 116, speed trap on 112, Rt 2).

On passing some other sportbikers on Rt2, I made the signal to warn them the police were ahead (touching the top of my helmet)....just wondered if you guys were aware of that signal?

Just passed the state trooper on Rt2 (just after you get out of the twisty section East from N.Adams - where the big campsite is). He had not set up a trap. The trap was on 112 in between 2 and 116.

in answer to the other half of your post:

I've seen 3 different "cop ahead" signals, to date:

    - patting top of head w/ left hand (most common)

    - twirling left index finger in the air

    - generic "slow down" signal... left arm outstretched, palm down, patting downward...

not that any of us really ever speed, but on 93 the NH state LEO had patrol via helicopter and plane this past weekend.

By the time you see the cop your speed was read about 2 minutes before you get there.

There they were, state cop standing in the middle of the highway pointing people to pull over.

Luckily, we had my spouses Ford Escort... not too speedy.

Best advice, when you see those little white markers on the side of the highway... look up, look down, look all around or all least don't speed there.

That section of 112 isn't really worth making good time on, and is often traveled by Enforcers. You'll find many Enforcers on those state roads you mentioned, and much more often now as traffic along those routes is already on the increase this season. Best thing to do is find the sweet sections and keep the speeds down in between them (no shit ). Also, with enough exploring you'll find alternatives to the patrolled routes to join those nice sections together. It's also nice to have alternative route knowledge for when traffic just gets too insane out there, especially on 2. Check out some of the local stores for one of these maps: http://bikemaps.com/regmaps.htm They can help.

Hiya, Mick! We traded our R bikes for KLR650s for a change of pace. We've only got about 550 miles on them though, as we've both gotten into racing our dirtbikes in hare scrambles. I'm sure we'll be back on some new street rides in 2004 or 2005. Until then, what pothole? It sure is nice being able to take ANY road around here now. Lots more possibilities, and lots of roads w/o Enforcer presence.

Was on Rt 112, near Rt 116, and we passed by a dude on a Harley who waved us down, 1/2 mile later a cop running radar....

I think they're cracking down on speeders on 112....

Those white marking aren't for speed traps OR timing vehicles on the ground from the air! Some may be used for that, but they're there for mapping purposes. I'd be weary of any ticket that claimed they used that method to determine speed. I'd go to court and wanna know how they came up with the equation to calculate that. Then I'd wanna know how they can determine it's accuracy seeing as they're timing from a MOVING aircraft...

Maybe Randy can shed a little light on the whole 'highway marking' thang for us...

They are actually large painted lines on the road at equal mile intervals... you can see them plain as day on I 87 south..

they time how long the car takes to cross each point ( 1 mile ). Usually the cars are selected based on their speed as compared with the normal flow of traffic ..

I hear ya. Fortunately we were just cruising at that point so no trouble. Rt 116 was a different story. Was on a pretty good lean through one of those nice 35mph right hand corners when passed the trooper on the other side -- I thought for sure he would turn around and pursue.....

Last summer I was targeted by a MA statie with laser. Luckily I was in my truck and was only going 75 in a 65. It was on I95 northbound near Georgetown/Rowley. It was the first time my detector ever gave me a laser warning, so immediately let off the gas and sure enough there he was on the onramp aiming the laser.

Just to keep everyone on their toes: The highways in NH have been swarming with staties all spring. Even summa the old highways (now considered 'secondary') have seen a recent increase in activity. Be careful!
