    Power from battery tender lead?

Is it possible to add a power outlet for GPS related things using the lead from a battery tender? Seems like that would be handy.

Re: Power from battery tender lead?

yes - I have a 12v plug that connects to the tender leads (cost about $7) - I can use it to charge my cell phone/ipod/etc. I I have the connection running into the "trunk" area (under the passenger seat). I haven't figured out how to run it up towards the front yet, but I may look into that for the spring!

Just be sure that you disconnect it when you park the bike.
Most cigarette lighters in cars shut off when you turn the car off.
The charger will drain the battery if you leave it plugged into the adapter, even if the GPS is not there in the situation that you described.

I know this from personnal experience. I have this exact setup on my bike.

is this for your 690SMC?? if it's similar to my 690SM there should be 2 available/open connections behind the headlight, one always on and one powered on with the key. Pretty easy to get to, just another option.

they should be fuses 8 & 9 in the fuse box, labeled as Supp. Equip. or ACC1 & ACC2 When you remove the headlight they'll be fairly evident, here's a thread from ADV with pics of the wires & connections behind the light.

...all things electrical for bikes can be found at Powerlet. Why not add a couple outlets. I did that on my ST2 and have taken it off for my first Multi and now on the new Multi...!!!

Re: Power from battery tender lead?

I did something very similar for a 12V socket that I ran up to the handle bars using my battery tender hookup so that I can easily unhook it when storing the bike for winter or if I want to plug in heated gear. Only I didn't know they sell them this way. I took an extra set of connectors, cut them, and soldered them onto a water proof 12V socket and put in a fuse in line to make sure I don't hose the electrics.

They make some pretty cool units these days that even have handle-bar clamps on them, which would make things really easy for those of us without fairings.

Just remember that setting it up with a relay means it will no longer work with the battery tender. I was concerned because my powerlet wasn't switched, but then I realized it allows me to

    1) charge my cell phone while stopped in case I really need the juice, without having to run the bike

    2) Use my battery tender without having to do anything except plug it into the powerlet socket.

I made it a habit to automatically unplug the powerlet (if I'm using it) every time I get off the bike, so I've never come close to killing the bike that way.

Re: Power from battery tender lead?

I bought this from burnsMoto ...it has a USB port instead of a cigarette lighter. I agree it is expensive than the other options mentioned here.

EDIT: I have this connected ALL the time. I didnt have any battery issues so far. Ofcourse, I "trickle charge" the battery atleast once a week.

I dont use a battery tender. well thanks to Scottie I do now

I never have or will use the quick connects for the tender. I had them on there when i got my bike and removed them. I hard wire everything i run directly to the battery. I never use quick connects.

yup especially from a permanent standpoint. When i can find a better way to mount my GPS without zipties or spending 100 bucks ill do it. til then if i know i am gonna need it i can either charge it the night before and use it on battery power or the night before i can just route the cigarette lighter to the battery and re install it all. pain in the ass takes about 2 hours lol...

but if i am gonna spend 100 bucks on my bike right now its tires...

Re: Power from battery tender lead?

Just a little info. Wallymart sells multi port units for around $10.00.not weatherproof , but they have rubber plugs that cover outlet holes . Some have 1 or 2 usb and 2 or 3 "cigarete" 12 volt outlets. The one I got has 2 12volt and 1 cigarete outlet, the 12 volt holes are a little bigger.
The great thing about them , is they have battery run down protection . So if you leave your gps on. , as soon as it hits the 10.5 volts , it shuts off and a blue led blinks.
It does plug into a 12 outlet , but you can cut it off or take it apart and add wire to go to your battery or switched or nonswitch power.

for Honda people... i hooked up a charger to my factory honda turn signals. when you re-place them there is an extra power lead for the running lights that aftermarket blinkers don't utilize. I hooked my charger here so it would turn off with the bike and be close to the front of the bike for easy access. works fantastic and wont drain your battery
