    Power commander question.

Im looking into getting a power commander for my bike, i dont really want to buy one new so im looking for a used one. I found a PC2 on ebay for my bike and im trying to figure out the difference between the 2 and the 3. I know the 3's are USB and all that but if i just got an adapter would it give me the same tuning? or am i better off waiting to find a USB one?

    Thanks in advance

    Jeff

    Its a 2000.

Pigman thanks for the info and i will check it out! I kind of wanted to try that stuff out on my own to get a better understanding of how it works... but if he can set me up with a good custom map that would be nice!

    Re: Power commander question.

Without actually putting your bike on a dyno and building the map there, the best someone's going to be able to do via the post is somewhat close. If you're going to get a PowerCommander, spring for the dyno time.

No, you can't get it right either playing with it on your own. : )

As far as PC2 vs PC3. The PC2 was serial based, the PC3 is USB. They both speak the same language, although the PC3 can run a higher resolution map as well as handle ignition, individual cylinder offset maps, etc. For 99.9999% of people out there, a PC2 will work just fine.

Personally, given the number of flaked out PCs that crop up, I'd buy new so you have a warranty.

I've got a PCII that came off my '00 750 you can have. I remembered when I saw this thread and just dug it up in my basement. FYI, the litter box is overfilled. You can PM me your address or come meet me this weekend if you want.

    Re: Power commander question.

you're best bet would be to have it custom mapped from a place like RJ's or Rob's Dyno. I think the PCIII was the 1st series to come with an available USB port to hook up to your laptop.

    Re: Power commander question.

any idea what that costs kromz? All i have is the slip on right now and im wondering if i do go and get it tuned if i should get a BMC or a K&N air filter? I would imagine that opening it up at both ends and then tuning it would be better...

    Re: Power commander question.

if you just have a slip on, and/or an aftermarket air filter, then just use the DynoJet maps listed here.

if you replace the plugs, then i would look into going to RJ's for a custom map. he ran some specials last year for $100. typically, it's around $300.

    Re: Power commander question.

What do you mean by replacing the plugs? Putting some iridium ones in or something? I just replaced the plugs about 1k miles ago with stock.

    Re: Power commander question.

Ok so with a big thanks to burnham i got a PCII and put it in. I notice a small difference but then again its not tuned for my bike yet. Im trying to get it tuned myself but i am having a hard time hooking up the cable to anything, i bought a serial port to USB adapter and got nothing. Any advice?

Burnham- what was it mapped for when you had it on your bike?

Only use the dynojet maps. Don't try to adjust things yourself

It was mapped for a full yosh system, but it was not a great map. I would send the bike over to RJ's or Seacoast Sport Cycle and have them map it on the dyno for you.

    Re: Power commander question.

unless you know what you're doing. the only thing you should be doing with that power commander is plugging a USB cable from it to your laptop and sending a map that you downloaded off the dynojet website. other than that, i wouldnt touch it
