    Unhappy power commander vs. closed-loop


    Throttle response on the 701 is annoying at low- to low-mid RPMs, and runs crazy hot even when unflogged. Basic reading indicates this is the fault of super-lean stock fueling, to be addressed with a Power Commander. Subsequent reading indicates the closed-loop system will actively fight (and ultimately conquer) the Power Commander below mid-high RPM.

    I have a strong preference for leaving all the OEM emissions equipment on the bike, but kneecapping a motor like this one is...philosophically uncomfortable. Let us not forget (NOT forget) the burn risk to curious bystanders or children who may brush against the exhaust can after parking.

    That cat reaches 700 degrees in no time. Definitely a public safety risk. Ditch it.

    What is the list of things you have done to your 701?

    I have one but have done nothing but ride it, change the oil and the tires. Most of the use has been on track so low speed fueling hasn't really been an issue for me.

    Yes the pipe getting ridiculously hot is a concern to me but the volume of the bike is also a concern. I prefer to keep it quiet. I have heard a couple of bikes with this motor and an exhaust on them and they are significantly louder than I want my bike to be.

    Glad to hear you've been tracking yours. Up until recently I'd done zero mods (aside from sumo wheels and kickstand), and haven't ridden it since starting to install this batch of parts. I totally share your concerns about noise, and am just crossing my fingers that the exhaust / dbkiller I ordered will fall somewhere below my personal "what an asshat" threshold. The odds are, I admit, 50/50 at best.

    Recently put on:
    - ABS dongle
    - deletes
    - that blinging oil filler cap

    Waiting to go on:
    - airbox, yoshi slipon, PC5 with ignition advance map
    - anti-vibe risers with steering damper
    - shift kit to reduce false neutrals

    I might be interested in more info on the shift kit to prevent the false neutrals. I've had a couple here and there but changed the way I shift to overcome the issue.

    What are the deletes and what are they supposed to gain you?

    Some people do the deletes (canister and SAS) because they're fanatical about simplifying the systems, or making space, or saving weight. I personally wanted to simplify subsequent install of the alternative airbox, and I wanted a configuration likely to best-match the fuel map I ordered.

    The shift kit will probably be the last thing to go in, because I'm in no hurry to remove the clutch cover.
