[probably dumb question] checking oil by yourself?

    is it possible?

i suppose i could just ask some random person on the street to either hop on my bike (which is out of the question) or to sight it for me.

[probably dumb question] checking oil by yourself?

    yes it is;
    Possible and a dumb question.

Read your owner's manual per chance?

The sv650 will either have a sight glass or a dipstick. Not sure which.

Oh, now I think I knwo what you are asking. Is it possible to hold your bike up and look in the sight glass?

Wouldn't you be the only one who would know the answer? It all depends on if you can hold the bike upright while on your knees looking at the sight glass.

Do it yourself. If you are worried about doing two things at once just lean it up against a wall, near vertical.

At least you are interested in checking your oil. I just worked on a bike that was down 2 quarts. Total amount of oil required = 3.

Uh oh, think about a rebuild....

yeah, i just did it by myself -- what a tippy-tottery pain in the ass, lol.

i was just checking it, not changing it (last time i changed it was 3k mi ago, so i'll probably just ride it a little more and then put her in hibernation).

Basically you have to find the bike's balancing point then let go of it and quickly check the oil level. the bike should be able to balance upright for a good 30 seconds to 1 minute depending on how level the surface is. this is the only way you will get an accurate reading.

In Dans defense in between those 1 race and couple practices he probably crashed about 6 times, so Im sure some leaked out then.

[probably dumb question] checking oil by yourself?

I think this is funny....on both stands the bike should be level to check the sightglass...
barring that, I have exposed beams in my garage ceiling....took a couple ratcheting tie downs, threw them over the 2x4s in the ceiling, and hooked up the triple clamp and the passenger pegs....
upright, level, and I dont have to work around stands.

Not a good idea in my opinion. Dont let go of it anad expect it to stay up by itself.

Also, you shouldnt be on the bike when cheniong the level in a sight glass.

If you are worried, just get a friend to hold it level while you look. Takes all of 2 seconds....

sooner or later you're gonna buy a front and rear stand...mine are from Pit Bull...problem solved...

(Btw, I tried the balancing thing. Couldnt find it. Bike fell over 4 times - once on me. I'm OK though. Maybe I need new tires???)

[probably dumb question] checking oil by yourself?

i'm out at school and don't have access to anything aside from a parking lot and the tools in my bike toolkit, lol.

all my friends were in class, cuz it was midday when i wanted to go for a ride.

and why would it matter having the oil sit around? i'll be starting it periodically, but i can't imagine having oil sitting around for 3mo being any different than oil sitting around for a couple days, even if it has 3k mi... i might be wrong, though.
