Looking for bike for street / trackdays

While looking for a new streetbike over the last few months I learned I don't know what I want. My budget is 5-10k. I plan to use the bike 90% for street and commuting and as a spare/ once a year track toy. Basically, if my track bike dies or is smashed I want something at home doing a trackday or two. I'm very much leaning towards another Ducati. After riding one I learned to love the feel of the Vtwin. So I've been thinking about the monster s4r. I found the asking prices vary from 5k to 15k for reasons I'm not quite sure of. I would really like to stay under 10k with mods and everything. The superbikes seem to be a little tight for my 6'3" frame. I like the 748/996 but I don't think I could be any sort of comfortable on them.

The Hyper's seem to fit the ergonomics bill. But everything I've read seems to say they are nice on the road but not great for the track. I recently checked out a 2010 streetfighter. In general they are real hard to find and they are a bit out of my budget. I don't know if they are worth the difference in price between the monsters. I've tried posting on the Duc forums but it seems to get ignored. So, I figured some people over here could have some good insight into real world use of these bike and maybe ideas of bikes I haven't even thought of.

    Sv. Done and done.

With the bottom of your budget you could get one that's totally dialed.

I know I sound like a squid but I feel like 60hp won't keep me satisfied on the street.

Am I confusing you with someone else if I ask whether or not you are the rider who has been to 3 trackdays and has yet to complete a full session?

If it is someone else I'm thinking of, pardon me for the confusion. If not, I have 2 more questions.

I'd love an 848. But with my size I'm really nor comfortable on the superbikes.

That's me. I finished 1 of 3 sessions. Anyway I think I know what your getting at. The SV is plenty for the track. It's more capable than I ever will be. But, I'm not looking to just buy another track bike, I want something nice for the street that is at home on the track in a pinch or if I feel like something different (Not a zx14). I feel like it's going to leave me wanting more on the street. As I see it it's kind of like the Miata of sportbikes. It's great for slicing and dicing backroads and at the track but you wouldn't want to go cross country with it. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: Looking for bike for street / trackdays

If you are looking to go across the country and possibly track days you may want two bikes instead. I am not sure you would want to cross the country on a 996 or a streetfighter. As for a Monster, plenty of guys have them and use them on the track and for street use. IMO I would go that route if you really like the vtwin and want a bit more umph than an SV. Consider the S2r1000 in lieu of the 996 monster motor if you want a little easier maintenance. As for everyone pushing you towards an SV....get what you want.

Let's say you're right and the SV is the Miata of sport bikes. What does that mean? It means it is a proper sport bike with modern (ish) suspension and more than enough power, well built and reliable all sold for a great value. Where's the downside again?!

Oh yeah, the badge won't impress anyone at stoplights.

I'd drive the SV anywhere. My beef with it is the ergonomics. ... Which is why I ride a DL650. YMMV on that front.

You are probably right; the SV is probably not the most desirable for open Interstate use. If you want to tour the Interstates of America, this is not the bike for you. Instead, find a 'wing or a heavy bagger.

The old adage "I'd rather drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow" applies here in spades. Don't be an idiot.

I'm not gonna call you an idiot, but the sv is the universal motorcycle. Soup it up, mod it to your liking, and keep it forever.
    They crash well, too!

If you really want something classy, one of those fancy monsters would be a viable option. They can be had reasonably as well.

I didn't call anyone an idiot. I just said don't be one.

The Monster 696 can be had for ridiculously cheap. I have an acquaintance that picked one up last summer for less than any of the gen 2 SV's he could find.

Guys he already has a designated track bike...

This would only be on the track once in a great while, like if his track bike doesn't start like last time.

    70, but who's counting?

If it's not what you what though, that's fine. I don't give a shit

Make a list of specific things you want in a bike. That'll help you figure out what you actually want.

The SV is fine for cross country riding, just not super slabbing at 100mph (though it WILL do 120-130.)

Re: Looking for bike for street / trackdays

Sounds like he wants something "nice" for the street.

He has a pretty good budget and depending on what he wants to do on the street he could find something "nice", you know to impress the hotties with at bike night.

I don't think he meant that he needs more HP for the street. (Unless he meant for 2 up type rides). Maybe you should look at a Multistrada.

How in the hell am I being the voice of reason here?

    Oh Hell, Get a Busa.

Let him buy what he wants. It's his money. It sounds like he already has a track bike so it will mainly be for the street and thus a sv, while a great bike, is not needed as he doesn't need a budget track bike.

Tuono? Fun motor & solid performer street and track. I'd imagine a used V4 would be under 10k. But even the original V2 is an awesome machine and would be a bit cheaper.

I don't plan to cross country at all I was just pointing out the sv may not be the best highway cruiser. Like smutty said I already have a track bike. But, I want something as a backup that will be at home on the track in case the trackbike dies.

That's the funniest shit I've read on here in days!! ... So you need more horsepower to crash better? Pretty much every person who has responded to your post, asking this forum for advice has said SV...and you want more "horsepower".

OK now that I have that out of the way ... as many on here will tell you I have owned many bikes in my short riding career (going on 7 years now - over 10 bikes). From a modded out Z1000, to an R1, a R6, a Bandit...the list goes on. When I first got into riding Neil (Expat) told me to buy an SV, I didn't listen. Last fall on a whim I bought an SV 650 to do two days at Jersey. Best motorcycle purchase I have ever made! I love the bike in every aspect, wish I had bought one years ago. Enough said!

Are you going cross-country with any street machine any time soon?

Only thing I'm getting at is that you plan on taking this bike-you-are-searching-for to the track and if 85-ish hp in that GSXR (and I believe there was also the ZX-14 you mention? The silver one?) did not offer favorable results then what do you suppose will happen when you lump another 30+ hp on top of that?

Of course, it is your money so I really don't care what you end up with. I only request that you consider what has occurred in the 3 trackday sessions you have ridden in and ask yourself if something much heavier and much more powerful than your dedicated track machine is the way you really want to go as far as bringing this new bike to the track.

Re: Looking for bike for street / trackdays

I think you guys are misunderstanding what I'm looking for. I'm in the market for a street bike to commute to work and ride on the weekends. It is not a replacement for my track bike. It's a replacent for my 900ss. I don't expect it to be better / faster / more powerful than my track bike now. In a pinch last year I took my street bike to the track because I had an issue with my gsxr the night before the track day and I still wanted to attend. It ended badly and I was just looking for suggestions for something I can ride on the street that will also be comfortable with a track day should the need arrive. I feel like I'm getting beat up here for wanting something more than an SV for daily use. I like the Sv and I wish I had one for my track bike but I'm not looking for one.
