pull-off tire w/o a rear stand (how do I?)

ok, here is the deal...

Pete is hooking me up with a "new" rear tire for my bike. My current tires is toast and I would not feel comfortable going more than 5-10 miles away on it. I want to bring Pete's "new" tire and my rim down to Degsy to get switched-up. Herein, lies the problem.

My bike has ONE rear stand peg on it. The other broke-off *at the threads* when I went down (prolly have to drill it out and re-tap/dye it). I do not own a rear stand. So, I'm looking for some good tequinices on how to stabalize the bike so I can pull the rear tire off (and bring it to Degsy). Can anyone direct to me web site for info, give me some pointers from personal experience, etc?

Can you get any blocks of wood (2x4 blocks about 10" long werk perfect) ? If so, first loosen up the axle bolt before you do anything. Then take off the lowers. Place one of the blocks under the sidestand and lean the bike on it (you'll probably have to hold it from fall the other way) Then build a small block pile under the header pipe at the farthest point back. You "should" (probably not with a broken body part like you have though) be able to pick up on the swingarm enough to lift the rear wheel off the ground and slide in your last block. I used to do it this way before I got a pitbull stand, it's stable and it werks

Well, if you can find a way to get a bolt into that spool holder on your swingarm you can put my bike on the kickstand & borrow my spool stand while you're over there grabbin the tire.

obviously just put my kickstand down before you take it off the rearstand

Another way you could do it is if you have two stable car jacks. You could use those under the swingarm. just be careful when taking out the rear wheel as it's not gonna be very stable.

Best option is to find someone w/ a pad stand & use that or get a buddy to jump in a car drive the tire to Degsy's while you ride your bike there & have Degs do it for ya.


EDIT: ooh, good idea Mark... yeah, prop it up on the sidestand, that'll lift up the rear.

Someone has to have a pad stand that you can borrow.

Otherwise.... I don't know about the R1, but on my bike the pivot for the swingarm is hollow and a piece of rebar can be slid through the bike.

Then the ends of the rebar can bet set on jack stands.

I have a paddle stand you could use if you like. Makes easy work of what your doing.

if you have rafters in your garage you can suspend the rear end a couple inches off the ground using ratchet straps.
, but break loose the axle nuts frist. A very strong tree limb will work too.

I also recomend taking off the plastics blocking up the bottom for stability while you are away chaingin gout the tires. But atleast the straps will help you get the tire off the ground


I know I am out in the middle oif now where but I have a rear paddle stand you can borrow if you need.

loosen everything 1st + then tie 177 Helium filled balloons to each side of the swing arm--remove wheel and stabilize bike using 17 rubber bands---now go change your tire

CAUTION---this must be done with ambient air temp above 71.6 degrees F----temp below that will require more helium balloons-the exact amount must be calculated using the quantum formula with the exact temp substituted in for the relevant numeral declassifier given the decimal numerater is 32.77543

I was gonna suggest the same thing as Burger did.
You might wanna go with 180 balloons though now because we may see a slight decrease in temperature and barometric pressure soon.
I have some car jacks too though that I used to use before I had stands. My stands are up in NH now though. More than welcome to borrow the car jacks if you need them.

thanks for the advice everyone. I'm gonna end up doing this at my parents house in Dedham, MA. They dont have a garage, but they have a drive way, which is more than I have. Dad has jackstands, and tons of 2x4's, so I should be all set. Pete, thanks for the tire. beer is waiting for you when you get home.

NOOOOOO----unless the formula specifically states 180-do NOT use that or when you return with your new tire the bike will be GONE!!!

i'm in norwood--right next to dedham---if ya want to do it here-I got the eqip + would't mind takin a trip to degsy's-------might need a couple more balloons though

As Sean said, hang from rafters or even sturdy tree branch, with ratchet straps is very reliable way, if you bump it is may swing a bit, but it wont fall of a floor jack or block of wood or other makeshift jack from underneath devise
