Well, I parked my car about 150 feet from there a couple weeks ago and my friend wouldn't let me walk back to it alone. But I don't know if he was just being overprotective. I felt comfortable. Then again it was pretty late.

God no, run away from that part of the city (Cedar, Spruce, Lake Ave, Laurel streets eastward until you start climbing the hill). There are always exceptions of course, but that area and East of it is great if you're looking for crime, drugs, gunshots....

Find someone that knows the area to check out addresses, or get a cheap motel room for a week and scope them out yourself.

I dunno... I grew up on the "west side" of Manchester and we weren't allowed to cross the river as kids. So I have some residual hesitations on the "East side". I only know one person that lives on the tree streets (spruce, beech, maple, etc) and he hated it.

The north end is by far the best, but it's expensive ...

I'd look north of Bridge Street/east of Maple, or south of Cilley Road, but that's because I prefer it a little less urban. at 180 Spruce, you'll be within an easy walk of Elm Street which is a great area for drinking and such. There's even some nice sidewalk cafes down there now (a big change from when I was hanging out on Elm Street, anybody here remember Boston Trading Company?) Another place that could be nice is the small area between Elm Street and the River. I imagine apartments in that area are kind of expensive though.

Yeah, if I were to be in walking distance to Elm, I'd stay more on the river side of it.

Had my shop and offices on commercial st. Not even 1,000 yards from there. Never was outside at night without being armed in some way, no joke. I'm 6'7" 260lbs and not afraid of much. Being jumped by crack heads,,,just a bit. What they said. Stay to the nicer areas, worth the extra $$

It gets nicer again, but not until Cilley Road or so.

Don't misunderstand me BTW, I lived in Manchester for 15 years and liked it a lot, you just got to pick the right spots. Did I mention the North End?

My buddy lived on West River Drive for a while. It was nice.
I think that is 'north end'.

NH is awesome, Nausea and the Rt.3 beltway however, might as well be part of Massachusetts. I avoid it like the plague, especially when on my bikes. An easy commute can be made from the Milton area, and the real NH comes into view. No harm intended Nashua/Salem/Hookset/Londonderry/etc-its.!

sooo... is this not quite far enough south?
471 Silver St, Manchester, NH 03103

it's one of those old mill buildings, a shoe factory actually. seems like really cool spaces in there.

Where did you live in Chicago? That might help us determine your tolerance of "sketchy" neighborhoods...

Re: Racer from Chicago... considering New Hampshire

i've lived in mostly nicer neighborhoods. i grew up in the burbs and have lived in old town and lincoln park - and back to the burbs at times. there's a pretty good deal at 471 Silver St... they said the bad parts are about 4 blocks north, does that sound about right?

Re: Racer from Chicago... considering New Hampshire

It's better than your first address, but still pretty urban, and not what I would call one of the "nicer" neighborhoods. I like converted mill buildings too, but look at the satellite view on Google and notice it's in a semi-industrial area surrounded by auto body shops.

yea the landlord wasn't trying to hide the fact that it's in a pretty industrial type area, but the big draw was that she's covering all the utilities, which in an uninsulated building like that is huuuge. and she's cool with me taking on a roommate if i wanted help covering costs.
