    Radar Detectors?

Escort Passport 8500 X50 and the Valentine V1 are the two best corded detectors on the market with price tags that reflect their performance.

The Escort Solo S2 is probably the best wireless detector on the market.

    Radar Detectors?

Problem I have with the V1 is it's just so big. I have a friend that has one in his truck - looks good in there but anywhere else ? -- I guess you could located it somewhere else and use the remote display unit.
I was thinking the cordless would be so much easier on the bike. On my other bike I wired in a cord and that worked fine.
Who knows - I might just wait till the begining of the season.

I've been using a BEL detector for several years. It works just okay. I often see the cop before it goes off. Nice thing is it's battery powered with a helmet speaker and the customer service is awesome.

    Radar Detectors?

I have an escort 8500 with the motorcycle alarm type squack box
    bought from a nesr MEMBER.

On the gixer I put it in with a line filter and its very reliable

I built an outside the fairing holder with the escort on my brake side so the escort readout faces me like in a car. Its velcro and plug in so i can pop it off for wet or security.

I have noticed that in the montains the leos seem to
have their radar on all the time and the system is solid
and saves me once a trip.

If stuck on an expressway I move with the traffic so no problem.

If it beebs with K or Ka I slow down till it stops I ignore all X band warnings.

the bel 8500 x50 is leaps and bounds ahead of their other products. I have one and a V1 and like them both equally as well. haven't put one in the bike yet, but will soon. just haven't decided if i want the heads up display or just an earphone yet. I think the earphone would drive me nuts....

The 8500 x50 is made by Escort. The difference between it and the older 8500 is its ability to detect POP Ka radar.

Find out how old your friends V1 is.

About a 2 years ago they shrunk the V1 by about 1/2" in thickness so it is a lot closer to other detectors now.

yeah...escort, thats what I meant sorry.

there are many more differences than just the pop detection, the entire curcuitry was redesigned and upgraded. It is much more accurate and responsive. I had an old one that I replaced w/ the x50 and its a whole new animal. I like that it comes in red or blue display too, and that its has a lot of programmable functions like being able to turn off X band, displaying a signal strength meter with multiple bands/bogeys, etc... the V1 arrows are nice though...

    Radar Detectors?

lot of peeps say the v-1 rear sensor & arrows are a gimmic, but that gimmic has saved me when leos play games with their bidirectional guns

hard wired detectors don't weaken in sensitivity due to a low battery

    Radar Detectors?

Valentine 1 all the way ! The detector is pretty much the same size as most, just the slightest bit bigger.

This had saved me 10 times over what the detector cost me. Well worth the Big cost!
And the indication arrows work very well as to point out exactly where the indication is coming from and how many signals it is picking up at once! I saw it pick up to 8 signals at once, unfortunately not all where actually radars they where store alarms or the lazer detectors used to open store front doors. I forgot to switch the mode to filter those out.

I swap the unit out between my bike and truck all the time.

    Radar Detectors?

Here's a nice writeup comparing the top three detectors:
    http://www.radartest.com/article.asp?articleid=9090

I went with the Bel for my new toy (not a bike unfortunately, needed a cage for work so I grabbed an 05 WRX ) since I found one for a pretty excellent price and I would estimate it has paid itself off already..and I've had it for a week.

    Radar Detectors?

I've been using the Escort Solo S2 for just over a year now, The only compaint that I have is that it doesn't work quite as well when the batteries start to run low. Even with almost dead batteries it has saved my hide numerous times.

I would've gotten the Passport 8500 but I like the idea of being able to swap from my bike to the car in seconds.

    escort 8500..2 power cords

    fwiw-

The 8500 comes with both a coiled power cord and a straight powercord. I believe the V-1 only comes with 1 power cord (a second costs extra). This was a selling point for the 8500 (as they are otherwise close) b/c... I hardwired the straight power cord into an extra key-powered line so I can mount the 8500 on the moto..turns on/off with the key.

I keep the coiled cord in the car along with the window mount and am able to swap back and forth...very quickly. Simply remove from one and mount on the other....simple.

The V1 comes with a coiled plug, a suction mount, a visor mount, a regular cord for direct wiring, and a little breakout box & fuse for direct wiring.

The wire is telephone wire anyway, you can wire it up however you like.

I do the same.. coiled wire in power point in the car, direct wiring on bike and swap the detector back and forth.

----I went to the radar test site that was posted, I don't know what they have against V-1s, some of the information given is erronious, like auto mute.

    Radar Detectors?

I can tell he is using a Garmin GPS V (as in five). It is the same one I have. At the time I got it, it was the best hand held GPS you could get and it was the only one that had autorouting capabilities. For long bike trips it works perfectly but its outdated cpu makes it difficult to navigate in cities where there are a ton of streets and points of interest. The screen just doesn't refresh fast enough.

One huge benefit of it for the motorcycle is that the screen is black and white so it is very easy to see in direct sunlight. It also has a very good backlight for night use.
