i need to build some ramps to get my bike and atv in the back of my pickup. its got a 6 inch lift so its quite a bit taller then your reg 2500 which start out kind of high to begin with. what length should i make this ramp?

It's all water under the bridge, and we do enter the next round-robin. Am I wrong?

does it have to be curved? i was thinking of using some wood planks that are at least 1.5 inches thick.

Depending on the height of the bed and the bike you could bottom it out, that's the reason for having curved ramps.

Yup to everything everyone said. If you want/can only make straight ramps, they will have to be pretty long; you'll need to avoid a sharp angle where the ramp meets tailgate.

oo i see what your saying, bottoming out hte bottom of the bike where the ramp meets the tailgate. id buy ramps but they are like over 200 bucks. id rather buy a trailer but thats not in the funds at the moment.

where can you find those metal ramp ends?

Be cautious with using wood planks and ramp ends. You're going to need extra long boards to get the bike into a lifted truck without bottoming. The stress on the middle of those long boards is going to be very high in the middle with that kind of length, wood may break. $200 is cheap compared to dropping your 400 pound bike out of a lifted truck. Even without factoring the medical bills.

That said, you can get them at home depot.

Yup again. You'll have to brace those wood planks to prevent flex (assuming you're gonna make at least 2 & walk up next to bike?). Do a search on this site...someone else commented that they ended up spending much more than they expected. By the time you buy the ramp kit ($30-50?), two 2x12 boards (which are barely wide enough IMO), board bracing (angle iron or something?)...you're gonna be well over $150.

FYI - If building your own, put an eyebolt into the sides of the ramp & use it to strap ramp to truck bumper...prevents ramps from kicking out.

Yea be very careful with wood. I needed to get my bike to a shop back in the spring for an issue I had. When we loaded it in the back of Punjisticks truck we had to use wood planks. WICKED sketched out by them. The wood was bending really bad. We ended up putting plastic buckets underneath the wood to stop it from bending. Also you got to worry about the ramp kicking out.

I'd invest in the curved metal ramps.

going to need a big ass hill for a 3/4 ton truck with a six inch lift.

i've used pressure treated 2x8's that were six ft long and never had a problem with strength even loading my heavy vfr. real ramps are the way to go still imo.

well its not for my bike, its for a quad. backing up to a ledge attatched to a hill is usually how i get my bike on. but i just got a dirt bike so my brother and i are going riding this weekend. he has a 400ex and there will be no hill or nothing to unload onto, most likely unloading in a parking lot.

as for wood bending, you really think wood 2 inches thick will bend under the weight? i only need to get the 4 wheeler in and out for about another month or cause that is when my bro heads off to school, so that is why i dont want to go out and buy fancy metal ones. for that much id rather save up and buy a trailer.

ill price some stuff tonight at lowes. it shows the ramp ends on their site for 20$ not sure if its the pair. wood i was thinking of a pressure treating 2 inch thick by 12 wide by 10 ft long. i like the idea of the i bolt on the side to hold the boards from kicking out

Yes I ride street. I had an 600 F4 as a first bike. The smoke shop in the square is kick ass! I stop in there once in a while for a nice "celebration cigar"

2x lumber has nominal thickness of 1 1/2". But yes, it will bend. All very dependent on length of ramp and weight distribution of load. A simple brace from mid-ramp to the ground would make a night-day difference. Just make sure the brace is secure and has no opportunity to slip out or cause ramp to tip sideways.

for bracing i was thinking of running a rib down the middle of the board with either some metal square stock or more wood.

They got some pretty cheap ramps on their site. Worth taking a peak.

I'd say you'd need at least a 10' ramp. You won't want to deal with this huge plank hanging out the back. If I were you, I'd save for a combo ramp/tailgate extender. Getting the combo will make the 200 bux more worth while. This is for the motorcycle though, I'm not sure what to recommend for an atv.

well the only reason i dont want to spend a ton of money on a good set of ramps is because they wont get used after mid august. after that my brother wont be riding with us since hes going away to school. i figured a cheap set of planks will work. ill check lowes tonight and see what they got
