    RandyO's V-strom 1000 built project

I've had idea's in the back of my mind about things I wanted to do to my V-strom 1000 to make it closer fit my lunatic need to ride in the worse of winter conditions

last summer my Vee was down for cancer surgery, the wire harness was completely replaced with extra care in assembly for winter corrosion protection during this process, ALL my aftermarket accessories have been removed allowing me to rethink how I've installed things.

    Things I've done so far

replaced stock rear shock with WP Suspension 5 way adjustable shock sprung for my weight & cargo, replaced springs, fork oil, rebound valve & springs in fork

I have acquired a debugged & operational prototype external alternator system. 60amp 1 wire alternator. I will run it completely independent (except a relay that will tell the auxiliary system when the bike is running) for my accessories. I will also use the auxiliary battery as an emergency jump start battery for cold weather (I know from experience, bike batteries don't have the cranking amps to start a bike much below -10°F) so I plan the biggest automotive battery I can find space for. I make room for a battery, I have decided to convert the dual exhaust to single exhaust and hang the auxiliary battery where the exhaust was

    Charging systemRandyO's V-strom 1000 built project-img_0457-jpgRandyO's V-strom 1000 built project-img_0463-jpg

I picked up a spare X pipe for modification into a Y pipe, had the work done, got that pipe back today

    2 things I'm looking for

    1. slip on to replace remaining stock can

2 Battery, as many cold cranking amps as possible, no more than 5˝ wide, preferably less than 8" tall but could go a little taller and no more than 18" long, but preferable under 15" length
I've found that looking up car batteries, is not possible (on line) by dimension, only by make & model car ya want it for

MC batteries won't give me the cranking amps of even a small car battery. Next chance I get, I'm going to the Batteries+ store in Newington, and hopefully get them to let my browse the warehouse

Unfortunately this doesn't have the pictures my paper Interstate catalog does, but dimensions are there. http://www.interstatebatteries.com/c...ron_plus_f.asp

    Interstate also sells Optima-

Based on doing a similar 2 into 1 mod on a 900cc Monster, you may have just seriously choked your machine's mid to top end. If you can I'd get a before and after dyno to see if that joint and header need to be enlarged at all.

On V-strom 1000, 2 into 1 has been done by several others in similar fashion. reports are that it helps the big Vee

No idea what your price range is...

If you aren't a cheap bastid like me you might investigate things like http://www.jegs.com/i/Lithium-Pros/4...ductId=1770167 (that was just one I found, I didn't go through all of them to find the most appropriate one).

Li po stuff is worst in the cold

I am sure you know but the starter amps are ADDEDitive when wired in parallel

so 2 210 cca gets you 420 crank amps

looking at the dimensions, the YTX14AH-BS is only 5 5/16" length, and 3˝ wide, I could fit 5 in parallel, and get CCA up to 1050, that may be my best option for max cranking amps. I would only need one to get set up, add the extras when I go out in -50°F

Odyssey batteries have pretty good cranking amps. I replaced the battery in my Jet Ski with one and it really cranks the crap out of it now.

I got it at Batteries+ in Nashua.

We're switching to Optima Red Tops one all our vehicles. Another AGM like Odyssey but slightly different technology. Smaller, lighter, will crank at low voltage, but cost about $165 versus $75 or so.

An Optima Group 35 battery weighs 31.7 lbs and is rated 720 CCA. An SLA Group 35 battery weighs 36-39 lbs and has around 550-650 CCA.An Odyssey Group 35 weighs 50 lbs but has very high CCA - 900.

Optima is owned by Johnson Controls. They claim to be the largest AGM manufacturer in the world.

I gave Optimas a real good look, I've heard excellent reports the past couple years, but the only batteries in their chart that "fit" are one that is only 450 CCA or the other is only 6volt

Your width spec is limiting. If you could go up to a little under 6.75 wide the Odyssey chart posted by Stromper has a PC1700 that looks like it would be a good fit for what you are looking for.

Wonder if you can buy the batteries used in automotive jump starters? The best ones are purpose-built. I use Clore Automotive.
The JNC660 we have weighs 18 lbs and will start multiple cars or even 7.3 turbodiesels mutliple times without recharging.

I know its limiting, its how much space I have where the left side exhaust can was between the subframe and my Caribou luggage rack

I'd be looking at Yuasa, since they make powersports AGM batteries.

Ahhh I was curious what the limiting factor on width was.

Any chance to space the caribou luggage rack out slightly to give the additional width clearance or is it some sort of welded part that would be inconvenient to modify?

Either way it works out, good luck getting it squared away. I have to admit I enjoy seeing posts like this about making modifications to equipment for functional reasons that still try to not make the bike look like a rolling pile of bolt ons.
