RC51 coolant issues, cycles from 210 to 220 and back repeatedly

When im moving, its okay, but when sitting at a light, the temp is not constant, it will creep up to 220 ish, then cool right down to 210 ish, then right back up again.

I have had the bike for like 7 years and its been doing it maybe the last 2-3 years, I really am sick of it and want to fix it.

    Im think,ing new t-stat?

    Any advice is much appreciated.

Mine used to get into the 230 range before the fans would knock it back down. I know some people made a switch to turn the fans on when they wanted to to help cool. Another mod was to change the direction the fans move the air.

You can test the thermostat in boiling water and when was the last time you flushed your coolant?

Seems the cooling system is working fine as it is staying within operating temps

Yeah, those bikes just get really hot. I thought mine was having issues back when I had it, but nope. Just some schwety balls.

Side mounted rads never helped them....my bud had the same issue and was told its normal. They suck at cooling......what can you do

In warm weather, I've always seen 215+/-5 once it's warmed up. Did yours used to run cooler? What temps?

My RR does almost the same thing. Gets right up to 220, then drops 5ish degrees when the fan kicks on.

Thats why I specified that I have had the bike for 7 years and it has only done it the last 2. I dunno, maybe its fine.

Maybe a simple coolant flush will do the trick.

Is it possible that you just didn't notice it until a coupla years ago?

Re: RC51 coolant issues, cycles from 210 to 220 and back repeatedly

Those bikes definitely run hot, but you knew that already. The cycling up and down could be a thermostat issue, do you still have the OEM fans installed? My temps cycled quickly after installing an aftermarket pusher fan, but that was good thing for me because it was just a better fan and more effective at bringing the temps down.

In the end I probably wouldn't be overly concerned because the temps aren't yet alarmingly high, but the fact that you've at least noticed a change probably is foreshadowing something you'll have to deal with in the near future?

Re: RC51 coolant issues, cycles from 210 to 220 and back repeatedly

OEM fans, I originally thought maybe I was having fan issues but they seem to be fine. I have heard of people swapping the flow, but like I said, this is a new issue, something is different.

Pretty positive that it isnt just something I didnt notice before, RC's have temp issues anyway so I have always kept and eye on the temp gauge.

I've yet to ride anything 1000cc or bigger that didn't hover around 210-230f, you know your bike better than me though.

I thought it used to be a lot more consistent around 210, much less fluctuation. I mean, sitting at a light, it will cycle from 210 to 220 and back like 4 times within a minute or so. When you start moving again, it will drop down and stay steady. it was cold this morn and was running at 180 consistently.

Maybe you guys are right, maybe Im just losing my mind.

Thanks for the advice. I think Ill flush the coolant since its been like 5 years now, and call it good. I appreciate the help!

In that case, I'd flush the system and check the relays & t-stat...

The VFR is the same way. 195-230 is normal operating temp.
