    Tis the season

I’ve been on the lookout for a good deal on a winter project for a while, even went to look at 4 or 5 bikes over the last few months. Facebook marketplace has been the only advertising source I’ve been watching.
I initially wanted an 04-07 cbr 1000rr repsol, but it seems most are rebuilt wrecks littered with Chinese replacement body kits. Anything that was decent, and priced reasonably, was sold within a few hours of listing it.
Last Friday evening, an 07 R1 popped up that looked super clean. I messaged the seller almost instantly, and went to look at the bike first thing the following morning. I came home with an almost perfect 07 R1 with only 5,800 miles on it. The guy handed me a box of receipts for aftermarket stuff he bought for it less than 6 months, the receipts totaled more than I paid for the bike.. lol

Full Akra titanium exhaust with carbon cans
    Power commander/tuner
    Swingarm extender (removing that)
    New tires
    Etc

My plans are to take the bodywork off, clean up everything and replace any missing fasteners, remove the swingarm extender, put it back to normal ride height, and ride it for a year or so before trying to resell it.

In the 3/4 profile shot, the bar-end is like trying to look at a super model who's got pink eye. All the beauty in it's orbit is being vacuumed up by an ugly appendage.

Yes, just slightly different body work. 04-08 is still my favorite generation of the R1

That bike was so easy to ride. Total hooligan machine. I still miss your RSV4 that you traded me for a week. That bark from the quick shifter was unreal!

I should have mentioned, the bar ends will be replaced with the original black ones that came in the box with other stock parts.

My winter project. I like my old girls. I am hoping to be trolling the street around April. It doesnt need much but even finding a spark plug for it is a several month ordeal. Got it cheap and i doubt i will ever sell it.

    Re: Tis the season

I’ve spent a little time with the R1 the past week or so, it’s definitely had some hackers working on it in its life. Nothing I’d consider major, but several little things. As I was taking the body work off, it was long before I noticed half the body fasteners were missing. I also noticed “LED’s” glued to the insides of all the body panels, so my guess is they just didn’t put stuff back together correctly.

It was refreshing to pull the body work off and find a clean, rash free engine.. lol

I was able to order all the new fasteners and pins to put everything back together properly.

Next step was to get rid of the 9” swing arm extender. Another hack job install, rounded over bolts, over tightened to the max. I would have finished that project, but need to order a new rivet link for the chain.

I forgot to order new grips, but did remove to spiked bar ends and replaced them with OEM. Also, got rid of the red windscreen and have a Puig double bubble in dark smoke on order.

Final issue, I noticed a slight oil leak at the drain plug. It doesn’t look like the stock bolt, so I’m guessing it’s been stripped and had a heli coil installed. I haven’t pulled the plug to investigate yet, but a replacement OEM oil pan is $75.00 on partszilla, so not really a huge deal.

    Re: Tis the season

I didn’t take any pictures yet, but the R1 project is almost complete. The last of the parts needed to put the body work back on, arrived today.

Also the oil leak that had me a little worried was only a drain plug with a cracked gasket. Someone installed an aftermarket magnetic drain plug. I just replaced it with a new OEM drain bolt and gasket.

I’ll be taking it out tomorrow for a test ride and to get a vin verification at the local Police Department. I must be getting old, my insurance premium only went up $68 per year adding the R1 onto the Tuono policy.

I’ll try and get some daylight pictures tomorrow.
