I think they look good, but a friend went down with one on and the jacket fell apart on him. It did not hold up and provided him with very little protection.

I think Wasted 420 has a *leather* Icon jacket... it held up pretty well in his crash.

I think some of them look alright, but I don't understand the need to have a piece of expensive metal as armor.

Good point I'm going to install carbon fiber peg feelers on my bike next chance I get.

The swing arm is not an item that is "worn down" in use.

Actually has anyone actually shown that they are really titanium? The could be steel or aluminum polished right and you could probably fake people out.

They do seem to have the right color/texture for titanium though.

You haven't changed a tire or adjusted the chain on a single sided swing arm have you?

Besides are you really going to give me a hard time about a SSS and not expect me to bring up neon lights, etc.. ?

I suppose I can see the "bling" thing but they claim it is armor.

One thing about the VFR though...

I haven't had to change the rear brake pads... and I'm guessing it takes longer than a bike with a conventional swing arm?

You're freakin dense today aren't you?

The Ti plates on the jacket are pure bling, the swingarm is not... it has it's own set of functional benefits and negatives. Any Bling effect with a SSS is a side effect.

What is the benefit of a Ti patch on armor as opposed to Kevlar or Leather?

Face it, it's BLING, just like the titanium plates on the ICON jacket. Both are NOT required AND excessive.

Stop interjecting strawberries into the argument!

Uh yeah. No it's not bling. The SSS is there for function on the VFR (it's a sport-TOURER afterall). The coolness just adds to the appeal.

I talked to the Parts Unlimited rep while I was down at Seacoast one day. He said that the only gear in the Icon lineup worth a damn is the lids. For the money they're very nice kit. But he said that the jackets, pants, shoes and gloves are all crap and that he's been offered free stuff for his own personal use (as promo items since his company is the Icon rep) and that he turned it down. He said it's purely for show but that the titanium makes pretty sparks while you're sliding down the road.

Am I serious? Yes totally. Are you really that clueless?

Reasons why a sport tourer would need a SSS.

    1) Takes far less time time to reove the rear wheel.

    2) Takes far less tools.

    3) The chain is not disturbed during removal/installation eliminating the need to adjust it after re-mounting the wheel.

    4) It's much easier to remove/install the wheel alone.

    5) The wheel bearings are captive with the hub so they are not disturbed during removal/installation. Ever lose a rear wheel bearing spacer in the middle of nowhere?

All of the above mentioned reasons come in very handy when you blow a tire and need to repair it or replace it hundreds maybe even thousands of miles from home or many miles from the nearest bike shop. You haven't been doing this for long, have you?

where do you draw the line between "bling" and useful feature?

    just curious...

edit: the SSS isn't NECESSARY, but because it provides all of those features which are convenient, I personally wouldn't call it "bling"

    unlesss it's polished/chromed/gold plated...

but maybe I'm confused as to the definition of "bling"
