    Reality of theft?

    I was wondering...

Does anyone know how often bikes are stolen around here?

Does it help if you lock the bike?

Any safety precautions you take that may be useful?

I typically never worried about it, but have heard a couple people mention recent thefts...

    Thanks in advance!

I firmly believe that if someone wants to steal something that is yours, they will. Locks, alarms, garage, etc can slow them down a lot, but there is almost always a way around.

You have to figure out what you're willing to do to prevent it from being stolen, and stick with it. Also make sure you always have good insurance. Other than that, hope.

If it is kept in trailer, shed or garage you could use a baby moniter.

    Re: Reality of theft?

A bunch of guys I know do a lot of snowmobiling in Quebec on a regular basis. Theft is horrible up there. They use locks every time they leave their sleds. The locks have marks all over them revealing many occasions where someone tried to cut through without success. For years this method worked, and the one night they didn't lock their sleds they all got stolen. Clearly for them locks made a difference.

Yes there are ways around them but if you get a good one it might be just enough of a pain in the ass for would be theives to deter them all together.

    Re: Reality of theft?

Like everyone has said if someone wants your bike, there's a way around everything. Obviously the best thing is to have a good insurance policy. There are some things you can do to help deter a would be theif.

    1) Keep your bike out of plain sight when it's parked at your home (Garage is best, next best is a shed). I've read countless stories of bikes getting stolen because it was parked in plain sight somewhere around their home. Very rare you hear a story about a bike being stolen out of a garage.

    2) When you're out riding around and you park the bike, I ALWAYS engage the steering lock. Sometimes I suppliment it with a brake rotor lock. I do know these locks are completely useless if you got two would be theifs pull up in a van and lift and throw the bike into the van. Google CBR Stolen in 30 seconds, it should point you to a youtube video that shocked me when i first saw it.

    3) When I park the bike I always park it in a location where I can have line of sight (if that's an option). If I park the bike in a parking lot and I'm sitting inside dunkies, I park it in a spot where I can see it while I'm sitting inside.

That's pretty much all you can do.

basically, like what everybody said, locks are just there to make it a little challenging for them....but, they usually just lift them up and shove them at the back of a minivan....it just takes seconds......they work like a nascar pit crew....just make sure you are insured i'd say.

Given your location and "security system" I would wager your house is not very high on the break in list. If you are worried though get some big ass chains and anchor them at 4 points to your concrete floor, 1 fr 1fl 1rr 1rl and I have a concrete hammer drill if you want me to swing up some time. Or just let the wierd one roam around

It's not when it's at home I'm worried. It's more when I'm working overnights. The bike sits outside all night. No were to "hide it". Tomorrow I'm heading into mass for a 2 or 3 hour lecture. Parking it outside for 3 hours unsupervised. I'm just curious.

    My house is safe

I'll get you a remote so you can hide it in the garage at work, take the 600 and rotor cable the thing and yes I know your house is very safe and that's why I don't have a new honda in my garage :hugs:

    Re: Reality of theft?

I just have good insurance - somebody steals it and I'll buy another one. I always lock the front wheel and try to park as close to buildings as I can and keep the bike in the line of sight. However I have the same thoughts most everybody else does here, if they want to steal it, they are going to steal it no matter what.

    Re: Reality of theft?

Correct me if I am wrong, but you live in the middle of nowhere.

This simply cannot be a high crime area, unless you live next to a meth lab.

Nobody is going to steal your motorcycle. However, sinking an anchor into the concrete in your garage and passing a massive hardened steel chain through the frame will tire you out enough so that you'll sleep fine, as you'll be too tired to worry about it.

I'd imagine most motorcycles there are stolen by people the owner/rider knows. Moral: do not hang out with dirtbags or meth heads.

Stop watching so much CSI and you'll think the world a less dangerous place.

    Corrected.

My advice is to take the cage to Mass. And in other situations, chain one the 40 rather large rotties you own to the bike. Ain't no one messing with it then

Besides, you ride honda's. who would want to steal one of those?

As stated above, I'm not concerned about my house. I'm concerned mainly about working an overnight shift in a city ... Leaving my bike out in the open for 14 hours... But anyway... Hopefully it'll never happen

Yeah, nobody ever robs houses in rural areas. That's just on CSI.

FWIW; the first post asked about bikes being stolen "around here" indicating to me (and at least one other member) that the location of Deering, NH was the area in question. I was about to respond with something regarding crime in Deering as well had I not continued to read the responses and eventually figured out that "around here" wasn't anywhere near Deering, NH.

    Just saying...

It's quite common in Boston for people to cover their bikes. Obscures what it is.

Dowco makes cover alarms that are $20 and loud as hell. They have a lanyard on a pin - pull the pin and the alarm goes off and there's no way to reset it. They're mighty handy.

    Depends what town too.
I would be terrified of leaving my bike alone anywhere in Lowell.
In Boston however I would want to keep it in a busy part of town rather than a back alley type of spot.
