One thing I don't really understand with patrol motorcycles, why don't the officers wear more gear? I understand that something like full leathers is probably unrealistic seeing as they have a vest on, plus have to run and still perform other aspects of the job, but I always think it's nuts that these guys are in short sleeves with uniform pants and all they have for protection is an open face helmet and boots/gloves. Also as much as I'd love to be a cop you couldn't pay me enough to ride a police bike. Talk about being a target.

As I was talking to the Chief of police in one of the CT towns - these bikes (HD) are not really used for a "real" police work, but mostly for parades, escorts and traffic control. I don't think the cops in the US ever use the m/c for anything else.
Now, in Europe and Japan is a different story.

I don't think this cop would have an issue with the speed bump.
Cops here in Texas use them for "real" police work all the time. They use Kawis instead of HDs, use them for speed enforcement and all that. They also use modular helmets, but still just the typical police uniform for gear.

NH State Police use motorcycles for traffic work all the time. I've been stopped and ticketed by a statie on a motorcycle.

That guy took a BEAT DOWN. Lucky he had his vest on. I think he did lock the front brake at one point, but it was going over either way!

The theory we came up with over on another forum was he panic braked and held the binders on as he went over the speedbump. If he had released and possibly even gassed it as the front approached the bump he might have faired better?
I bet he would have faired better. Not that I actually know anything, but I think I'd rather get spit out on a hard landing than endo at speed like that.
Bottom line: Sucks to be him
when I do something stupid like that, I hope there is no video that gets posted for everyone to see on Youtube

maybe he late braked for the speedbump or reacted quickly as his front tire hit the bump, but with reaction time the front brake applied just has the rear tire was lifted by the bump

Sounds about right. I've had instances where a raised sidewalk or unpainted speedbumps caught me by surprise.

I hate speed bumps, even in a car. Westfield Mass just redid their main drag with huge raised crosswalks, sure to spit unsuspecting riders at night. The engineer who designed it is on my hockey team, gonna give him hell for it when he comes off the DL!
