Recommendation for a good race helmet that plays nice with a Leatt?

I had an Arai something or the other that worked well with my STX-RR, but switched to the Bell Star last season and the Bell's profile did not like the leatt. I'd really like to start wearing the neck brace again.

I'd like to buy a different helmet for next year but preferably one that is known to have a profile that doesn't mind a neck brace. Something solidly mid range would fit the bill nicely. Will be race use only, so don't care about any street comforts.

Recommendations and thoughts welcome, thanks in advance.

I don't have any issues with my Shoei Qwests and my brace.

The Qwest has a slightly more rounded internal shape than the Bell's, FYI. Might want to try one on first.

If I remember correctly, the shape of the bottom of the Bell Star has a outward flare to it which is probably what causes the conflict. I would look for helmets with a neck opening that tapers, rather than flares outward.

How about you take your neck brace with you and go to a dealer that carries a lot of various brands of helmets and try them to see what works together?

Yes I plan to go to the RevZilla showroom in Philly this winter to do that, and to put together a two piece suit that actually fits...

Also looking for actual first hand experience from riders here. Hard to simulate leaning into a corner with a neck brace and helmet in a dealer showroom....

    Sounds like a solid plan.

Have you tried playing with the pads on the Leatt? When I took off the rubber baby buggy bumpers on the underside of the brace, the situation improved considerably. Helmet is a Shoei X-12, suit an A* GP-Pro. Full disclosure: I got in on the Helite GP Air vest group buy that Bruce ran at the end of last season and sold the brace.

Looking at pics/video of racers, it seems that AGV helmets have a steeply raked neckline that ought to be good....

Interesting, never thought of that. I'd have to research if removing those pads alters the brace's effectiveness any. Thanks for the tip.

Moving the brace away from the helmet slightly increases range of motion before the brace becomes effective. No way around that. More to the point, a helmet that contacts the brace later (which is what you seek) does the same thing.

Think about it. The whole point of the brace is to stop your head from moving by having your helmet whack into it. A helmet with a rim that sits farther away from the brace will have the exact same effect as lowering the Leatt.. more head movement before it hits the brace.

I removed the little pads as well. They dug into my collar bone area and were a bit annoying. It also helped the brace sit more solidly on my shoulders. I have not noticed any issue with over-extension after having removed them.

The pads are to adjust the spacing between the brace and helmet, there is an ideal distance the instructions have you aiming for, and if you need to pull the pads to get there, do it.
