    Registering a CRF450x in Vermont

I figured I wold post this just in case someone had the same thoughts.

    Option 1: "The easy way"

    1. Purchase bike
    2. Go to DMV
    3. You need the Certificate of Origin (Or MSO)
    4. You need a Bill of sale
    5. You MAY need a Vin verification
    6. Pay taxes, Reg/License fee and walk out with a plate/Reg/Title.

    Option 2: "Doc's way"

    1. Purchase bike WITHOUT Certificate of Origin
    2. Go to DMV
    3. Have Bill of sale and Reg paperwork.
    4. Be polite and act lost.
    5. Get told that you need the C of O
    6. Repeat step 4.
    7. Get told you need Vin verification and the C of O.
    8. Repeat step 4.
    9. Get 60 day Temp Reg and plate with reminder that you need to get the Vin verification and C of O to the DMV within 60 days.
    10. Have cop friend come do Vin verification
    11. Have the guy you sold the bike to look for the C of O AGAIN
    12. Call connections at Honda dealer and ask for assistance (still waiting)
    13. Ask used bike dealer friend for assistance (No help)
    14. Search the web and find that you MAY need a letter from Honda saying they don't give out duplicate MSO/C of O's and hope that will fly with the DMV.
    15. Search for original owner (just in case)

    And so the saga continues.

Good news: The CRF is plated and I will be riding it soon.
Bad news: Possibly $222 to ride it for 60 days.

Not that I'd suggest it, but I've seen a 650 registered as a 250. Under 300ccs = no title in Vermont and, generally, a lot less paperwork.

(No, I haven't tried it, just seen the paperwork for a 650 that showed as 250cc and been around the process of correcting the error, which fortunately ended up not being painful. I don't know if that was a matter of luck or of policy, though.)

Thought of that. Came damn close to writing 250 in the block but my conscience got the better of me.

You've got the dirt wheels for it, right? 21"/18"? I'd recommend Conti TKC-80s or Dunlop D606s for dual-sport use.

As for 17" supermoto tires... dunno. You would know better than I, since I don't have any bikes with a 17" front wheel.

PS: We'll be riding maintained, Class III dirt roads tomorrow, so nothing you couldn't do on street tires. I need to give my wrist another few weeks before doing gnarlier stuff.

I am keeping thew dirty rims shod with dirty tires.

I am thinking Avon Distanzias for the 80% street 20% dirt roads I might do with it.

Full-on dirt? If so, where are you riding?

You could also go with Pirelli Scorpion Pros, which are basically full-on dirt knobbies, but they're DOT-approved so you can legally use them on Class 4 roads.

I am thinking Avon Distanzias for the 80% street 20% dirt roads I might do with it.
You might also want to look into Shinko 705s, which are true 75/25 tires (the Distanzias are 90/10). I've run several of the Shinkos on my V-Strom -- great tires. They handle really well on pavement, and work nearly as well as TKC-80s on dirt (as long as it's not muddy). Plus they're inexpensive.

Pirelli MT-60R's are a pretty good choice as well. That's what my friend Jason ran on his Tiger 1050 on the Trans-Lab trip last month.

No, don't buy a dirtbike because riding opportunities around here are ridiculously limited; buy a dual-sport. Or at least a plated enduro bike.

Ask Keith if you don't believe me. Awesome ride today, 115 miles mostly on dirt roads.

Because you were in Vague-Ass. If you had been around (or hadn't been posting Vegas pics to Facebook, making me aware of your absence), rest assured that an invitation would have been extended, and you would have subsequently been pestered into accepting.

Repeat next weekend, if the weather's decent.

    BAH!
Buy a Dirtbike, Plate it, ride it in the dirt, ride it like a dual sport and motard it to ride it on the track. 3 bikes in 1.

Or you can just get one of the more dirt-oriented dual-sports and not have to worry about Certificates of Origin or a full-on dirtbike's much higher maintenance requirements.

Or you could just make sure you get the C of O when you buy it (I got nothing on the higher maintenance) and be able to ride it on the track. That big front wheel on a dual sport SUCKS for street handling.
