Registering a dirty bike in RI

Has anyone registered a dirt bike in RI? I cant find anything about it on the DMV website. The requirements per the website are posted below. I also cannot find any information regarding "Proof of Previous Owner" for non-titled vehicles.

    Application for Registration
    Insurance Information (valid RI insurance)
    Sales Tax form
Title (if model year of vehicle is 2001 or newer)
Seller must sign the back of the title (if model year of vehicle is 2001 or newer).
    Bill of Sale
    Gross Vehicle Weight
    RI license or identification card
Proof of Previous Owner (non-titled vehicles)
Gift letter (notarized if vehicle gifted is from a non-immediate family member)
If two owners on title, both parties must be present during registration, if not, signature of the absent party must be notarized on Application for Registration. Vehicles 2001 and newer may be titled in two names, however only one name will appear on the registration.
VIN Check: Vehicles 2001 or newer, if the title is from another state or the vehicle was registered in another state, a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) check is required before you register the car.
Sales tax must be paid at the time of registration in the State of Rhode Island.

You won't be registering a dirtbike. You'll be registering a motorcycle. Let dirtbike never leave your lips.

I'm wondering if the VIN will somehow get flagged as off-road use. Also not sure what they will take as "Proof of Previous Owner" for something not titled. Or if I can do this at all for something like KB's bike, newer than 2001 but not titled.

Not picking up KB's would be a mistake. I'm all about cheap bikes, but cheap CL dirtbikes rarely pan out as cheap if you actually want to ride them. Ask Bhavesh or Kurlon.

Yes, please ask me about my $700 CL dirtbike. I love reopening old wounds.

Re: Registering a dirty bike in RI

I've done it a few times in RI. You either buy a new KTM whatever model you want and walk in to the DMV with an open checkbook or cash, and walk out with a plate...or you buy a used already plated/titled bike. If it's an in state sale, just go to the DMV with either the title, or the previous owners registration. If you buy it out of state, you need to bring the bike and the bill of sale/previous registration/title to the police station for a vin check prior to going to the DMV. Vehicles 10 years old or newer need a title, older than 10 years, you need a bill of sale and prior registration

Even I say go for KB's setup. If for no other reason than because the title legwork is done. If the thing is already plated, you should be in and out with zero hassle. That seems like it is worth money.

Buy KBs bike. If you hate it for some reason you should be able to flip it in the spring and not take a loss. I see it as zero risk transaction.

If I had the extra money right now I'd buy it myself in a heartbeat.

Mine does. They charge me the 2% though. Luckily my bank is across the street so usually I get my total and walk over and get the cash

For all transactions? Are you sure it isn't just on a limited subset, like license renewals and fines? I was just in the MA RMV (Fall River office) a few weeks ago and there are signs saying they will only accept cash or check for registrations (and tax/title?) specifically.

Re: Registering a dirty bike in RI

    DON'T BUY A $700 DIRTBIKE

    looks pretty innocent, right?

wrong...start off with: the rear brake pin won't come out and the pads are down to the metal. The bike doesn't idle (what could this mean?), and the clutch sticks a LOT.

carb is cleaned to the dot:

    and tried some different jetting:

we go for a couple rides and just deal with the lack of idling, and now the forks are leaking...so we strip it down into pieces, take it to PK to get the suspension "fixed"

    literally, pieces:

over $1,200 later - he fixes everything to bring it up to normal. Replaces steering head bearings, front/rear wheel bearings, upper shock bearing, pivot linkage bearings, drills out/helicoils that rear brake pin, services the front forks (oil, seals, etc.), services the rear shock (oil, recharge, etc.), and I prob. throw in a hundred into a new air filter, fluid change, etc.

So now I'm up to $2,000...bike still doesn't idle; and honestly feels close to what it was before I opted to the "proper" servicing to the bike.

Clutch was grabby...so new barnett clutch basket:

we take it for a ride at Franklin, and the bike randomly dies

we push it to the freeway and I pick it up...going home and checking ALL The electrical wiring (which is a PITA), I find this -

    how/when did this happen?!?

fix that for mo' money...then the bike keeps making weird creaking sounds at franklin (and it still doesn't idle btw)...and gets stuck in gear once in my driveway

start ripping it apart again, and this falls out

how the F did this happen?!?!?

oh btw - that's an inherent design flaw in the '98 model of the RM125 - they did not reinforce that part of the case very well, and it breaks off...and it's the ONE year that they transitioned between different case designs (96-97 had a water pump on the outside...'99+ had a different angle that the cylinder sat relative to the crankcase)...so I couldn't even replace it from another year RM125!!

finally find a donor RM125 w' a busted top end...

swap the 144 eric gorr top end onto the other bike's bottom end and be done, right?

wrong...old motor's casing had been modified to provide "skirt clearance"

that little lip needed to get shaved off:

gotta split the cases to do it...

    shave away....

split both cases to get the hot rods stroker crank out of the old bottom end:

here I found the root cause of that "creaking" sound...a case bearing (which requires blind bearing removal...probably the last bearing to ever get replaced) had failed, and just beat the f' out of the crankcase:

remember how the bike wouldn't idle? well...after opening the power valve, did something seem off?

oh yeah...it's friggen broken, and the exhaust valve was never lowering!!!!

if you've gotten that far w' a broken case bearing messing everything up - you DEFINITELY want all new case bearings (for another $150), right?

oh yeah, and when I was shaving the case for the piston skirt clearance, I nicked part of the crankcase with the dremel, and now it leaks radiator fluid into the combustion chamber...

crankcases get sent to a machine shop to get that smoothened back out, and the dude's shop dog dies after so many years...he's backed up for months.

YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING ME!!! AAAAAAAHHHH!!!!

Anyways, I finally get the cases back, they came out mint. He also rounds out the seal for the shifter because it's rounded and was leaking oil...he also found the donor bike's crankcase is breaking at the SAME place as the old cases! so he had to put in his own reinforcement...then finally I bring it to Adam at out-of-control racing to reassemble the bottom end (I couldn't figure out how to put in crank bearings straight, for my life)...crank binds a little bit, and we get the whole thing back together to run:

I literally just do ONE run at Stimilon, ride it in the backyard and the local spot a couple times, and sell it.

$3,500 later..I literally rode the bike 8-10 times...for $3,500...and the next buyer locks it up after one ride.

    so yeah...F $700 bikes.

P.P.S- unless you can be sure that it's truly an all original, low hour bike...I'd need to see a pic of the kdx and have an opportunity to interrogate the seller before passing judgment. While I have owned a $700 bike that turned into a $3,500 project, I have also bought/sold/made money on another 7 or so. The good thing about dirtbikes, is that they are recreational items - find a dude that has a good condition bike that just got married, has kids that are involved with every activity imaginable, just bought a house, or just not willing to make the 1 hour trek to go riding, and is looking for a quick cash sale. To find these bikes, you gotta wait, hunt a lot, and move quick on a good deal...they don't come up often. If you're not willing to wait/hunt, then buy KB's bike.

I'll just note my $700 bike is called the eBay Special for a reason.

Also, it has an $850 carb on it.
