    Re: Anyone ride a DRZ?

I would not spend $5,500 on two DRZ's....

690 Duke FTW. The first link Point37 posted is a gem. The '08-'11 models are the unicorn years, come stock with Brembo's, Marchesini wheels, fully adjustable suspension, slipper clutch, and are the first years with EFI.

i would personally go for a SM510R but totally agree on that '09 Duke listing ... i remember seeing one for the first time in the flesh at a sumo event (in the lot) and wanted one so, so bad.

One blurry photo, and "original brand new fuel pump" at only 10k miles plus some grammatical and spelling gems... I'd proceed with caution personally.

I bought a ‘14 S new, it was my first “dirt bike” and I didn’t know any better. Anyhow...first off, it was completely gutless. Absolutely no punch to it. Also, which I didn’t appreciate until I rode other dirt bikes, it was HOLY FUCK heavy. 325 pounds...for a DIRT BIKE. Those were the two issues I decided I couldn’t live with. Outside of that, the cheap ass Suzuki switchgear was annoying. The 80’s analog gauge cluster was trash. It’s was just a bad bike that I never should have bought.

Basically, it was a tractor. Not like when people say the a dirt bike “tractors” really well, like an actual tractor.

I agree. But it got through some shit. I was impressed. Doesn't mean I would ever own one, but there is a person it is right for. Somewhere.

The first time I met Duncan he showed up to play dirt bikes on a DRZ.
The second time I met Duncan he showed up to play dirt bikes without a DRZ.

    Re: Anyone ride a DRZ?

    Aaaahhhh...
I’m not using it on dirt, only a small commute 6 miles away through twisty roads. My CRF250L was 322 lbs, coming off a ZX12 it very light to me .
I see them selling for good $ and it seems a ton want them also so I’m sure if I don’t like it I’ll toss it. KTM is a few years away for me so I guess I’ll live and learn maybe . Getting it Saturday as I thought the 40 min riding it was good to me . 🤷🏻♂️

    Re: Anyone ride a DRZ?

I'm confused. If you want a light, low powered bike just to ride street on, there are a million options that fit your budget and are way better than the DRZ. I got my brand new 2018 RC390 OTD for $5,300. Dukes, Honda 300s, Kawi 400s, R3s, there are so many small, fun bikes I would have over a DRZ if there is no expectation to take off road.

I think you're letting your desire for one impact what the market is actually demanding for them...or just reviewing what people are ASKING for them. Not what they're actually SELLING them for.

Maybe I'm way off, but its a niche bike and all KTM/Husky sumo options are better. However, you should be able to get a good deal buying in New England in October, so I don't disagree that you should be able to flip it in the summer and at least breakeven.

    Re: Anyone ride a DRZ?

If you MUST have a DRZ-SM, find an older model for ~$3000. It’s the exact same bike and you’ll have a much easier time flipping it for what you paid for it.

For a 6 mile twisty backroads commute, I would 100% recommend a Grom. Mine had a topcase on it and it was an awesome silly fun commuter. 225 lbs, 100mpg, and super easy to ride. I sold it to another guy on here as my garage was getting crowded but I kinda miss it. Find one for close to $2G and you also would be able to easily flip it.

    Re: Anyone ride a DRZ?

    I don’t want a 300 sport bike
I have looked a a bunch and the duke has too much crouch for “ me”
So Honda, Kawi, Yamaha are ok but not a Suzuki in the same class? Weird
They are popular and long lasting for a reason I would think. Yes if you are 6 foot 5 and two fitty you are going to hate it. And some say VW’s are good cars 🤣
I’ll try it and tell ya after the summer.
It’s only $ and I guess the reason they make different bikes , we are all different.
    Maybe I’ll regret it

I’ve owned a 400SM. I was fortunate enough to get it for $2500 though. If you can find one for $3k or less go for it and you’ll learn without losing much money.

They haven’t changed since 07(may be mistaken here) so buying one newer won’t gain you much for the extra money spent and have a lesser chance of making you money back.

Unless it’s for $2k. Then it’s a cheap toy so who cares. Anything beyond that my no gets stronger.

    Re: Anyone ride a DRZ?

I owned one. I say fuck-it, dowhatchuwant. They are fun bikes, just won't blow your hair back. Sounds like you rode one so you know this.

Seriously though, Duke is too crouch? I just pulled up cycle-ergo and they spec at like almost the same. The DRZ's cockpit is tighter-which fits my experience. But hip angle, forward lean, all almost the same. And the Duke doesn't have the sky-high seat height.

For the money you are talking I'd be after a nekid something-something. On the cheap-side a beater SV with more money than the bike is worth thrown at the suspension. Or maybe an air cooled Duc, maybe an 1100. Something like that.

    Clearly YMMV.

Colin, I suspect he's crossing the RC390 with the Duke in his head.

That I buy. Don't do that!
IMO the Duke 390 is KTM's street going ~400cc class SM.

OP is looking at DRZs. That isn't a "dirt bike" either. Extra much so when talking about the SM.

This is EXACTLY my point. He doesn't want a dirt bike. So why is a DRZ even on the list?

To me, the DRZ is a bike capable of riding on and off road with mediocre capability. The thing that sets it apart is they can be had cheap, they're reliable, basically free to insure because you would carry the absolutely minimal coverage, and if you crash it it doesn't matter.

If you don't ride it off road and pay $5k for one, that entire argument goes away.
